I am trying to find some information on the transmission in my sons 1994 Dodge Spirit and so far I have found nothing in the internet. I am not sure what transmission is in it, its a three speed automatic, thats about all I know.
The reason I am asking is that it seems to be stuck in reverse when running. The car has never acted up before he bought it six months ago and it hads 150,000+ miles on it. On Wednesday he was driving along and he said it felt like the brakes started to grab, it was pulling from side to side and lugging the engine down. About the same time he approached a slight turn in the road and teh car started to make a grinding sound so he pulled over. He looked all around and under the car and hood aand found nothing visual so he tried t omove the car and it would not move. He then shut teh car off and pushed it about an 1/8th of mile and around the corner to get it off the main road.
When I got there I started the car and went through the gears. The shifter goes through the gear selection fine with no binding. When I shift into reverse you can feel it engage but it wants to go forward. When you go to neutral you can feel it disengage but the car will not roll freely, it is bound. If you shut the car off and put it in neutral it rolls easily, thats how he pushed it an 1/8th of a mile. When you put it in drive it engages but will not move, it still feels bound, same thing for 1st and 2nd. If you hit the gas while in gear it just bogs the motor like you have your foot on the breaks, it will not rev or slip. The only thing is in 1st gear if you give it enough gas it will overpower the bind and move but it grinds like you are trying to put it in park while the car is moving. I was able to drive it on the trailer like this and when we got home we had to push it off the trailer.
I checked everything out under the hood and found noting out of place or leaking. tThe transmission is about a pint low on fluid but still within the factory range.
If anyone has any ideas as to what the problem could be our even has an idea what type of transmission it has the help would be greatly appreciated. I have no problem changing the trans out but would hate to do this if it is only a solenoid or something simple.
Thanks in advance
Rob
