    Re: Our '72 Demon

Now she sleeps through the winter.....waiting for the snow to go away.

The car is far from finished. The interior is mostly home-made (or custom - engineered ;D) flat vinyl door panels n' such that I put in as a temporary solution until I could afford the real deal. There are new valvcovers to replace the baffle-less ones currently on the engine and I need to get tail-pipes and tips installed as soon as I have the cash scraped together for the tips. I also have a bunch of cool little upgrades pulled from junkyard cars that I want to add as time permits.

....I'd like to finally figure out why the speedometer refuses to work as well............. >

The plan for this summer is to drive the car as time permits and hopefully run it down the track a couple times to see if she's worthy of being called a "hot rod."

Wow! Beautiful work. I was worried when you started tearing into such a nice car, but the results speak for themselves. Very nice. Your garage looks pretty cool too.

        Thanks for the positive comments.

Well - the whole idea was to find a car that was as clean as possible for a starting point after recently junking a car that was so bad as to be structurally unsound. And this one was extremely straight and clean, but the paint was very tired - thin to the pont where it was scrubbed through to the primer over much of it. It was also very much an example of a sloppily - built '70s mopar - with huge paint runs in the engine compartment, undercoating oversprayed everywhere and poorly matched body panels.

I can't say I felt bad about upgrading her at all... ;D

Great story, and thanks for posting. Personally I could not have molested a survivor like that; in fact, my favorite cars have original decent paint, a good stance, and speed. Different strokes.

Great car and picture/story. You don't hardly see Demons anymore. I had two high friends really into the Demon/Duster. The Demon was like Panther Pink with a 440 until he let his girlfriend drive it. She lost control and hit a tree in the driver door. That poor car was half pink and half primer mud brown for the rest of high school. The Duster was a 72 340/ 4 speed with stripes, go wing, rallys and bench seat. It was damn fast, gave me a lot of respect for those small blocks.

No ... thank you for providing the forum to do so. What I posted up was a real "reader's digest" digest of the rebuild - we have probably 5 - 600 pictures detailing the work we did, particularily when we had to "invent" things due to budget or unavailability. I just posted a few for entertainment value because you gave us a place to do so.

As far as the "survivor" thing is concerned, well - I picked this car for it's relative straightness and rust - free body, but in my opinion, despite it's low mileage it was far from a survivor. The paint was done, both bumpers were tweaked, (if you look close, the new rear bumper is actually a '73-up piece) the interior was completely dry-rotted & reduced to powder from sitting in the sun for years - including the cardboard headliner which had been soaked. On top of that it was a 318 car with tiny drum brakes and a 7.25 rear holding highway gears. Had the car been in nicer original shape or better equipped, I would likely not have bought it. As it stood, I think it was the perfect candidate for being shown some love...I guess that's what I get for posting up the best "before" pics I have....

But - like you said: Different strokes. Part of what I find so appealing about this place is that people seem to enjoy & appreciate each other's differences of opinion, rather than getting their noses all bent out of joint and fighting over them.

Lots to learn here, by just opening up your ears and listening to what others have to say.

Thanks for all the comments folks. I truly appreciate them. 8)

I think we have all seen cars that looked good in online photos, only to see something completely different in person. Bad paint, rust, dents seem to magically disappear. Rattle canned engine bays look like they have been professionally detailed, and so on. I have had a few wrecks myself that look halfway decent in photos.

                          BTW, nice car.

Sounds great, the car looks AWSOME! I am really starting to like the Demon/Dart front ends! What track are you going to racing at SIR? I am hoping to maybe make it over there once this year, its a bit of a long haul. I usually race at MHDRA in Medicine Hat. Nice to see another Canadian Mopar! ;D
