My young and impressionable daughters are now part of the Red Sox Nation and I'm pretty sure they've never seen an inning of baseball.

They both came home from school (one First Grade the other preschool--in a church!) yesterday with pictures they drew of Wally the Green Monster (Monstah). My older daughter was singing 2 versions of "Take me out to the ball game" (one is the traditional version, the other for when they start 0-6 and the fans turn "Boo, Boo, Boo for the home team...") She also told me that the kids who stay after school while their parents work were sitting in front of the tv watching the game.

They were just going on and on about opening day in general. I told them that the Sox beat the Yanks yesterday on opening day and my daughter exclaimed, "Go Sox!"
I wouldn't worry about this too much. Up here in Wisconsin, most parents report their little'uns first word were GO PACK GO. And I'm sure they have green and gold diapers for sale here. ;D

As a "Not A Sports Fan" I just don't get it. When you root for a sports team you are rooting for a big corporation. It would make more sense to me to root for GE or Ford or GM when they have a great quarter. They employ many more folks and actually DO something besides employ millionaires to play a kid's game. Like I said, I don't get it.

I'm not a huge sports fan, either, but I certainly wouldn't cheer for any big company when they make a profit (unless I owned shares in it). The reason why we all cheer for the big corporate-owned teams instead of the corporations is that they don't really do anything to seriously piss us off, compared to major corporate entities. If you spent two weeks without phone or internet because AT&T couldn't be bothered to show up at your new place, would you cheer for them if they had a great quarter?

Besides, it's human nature to want to be a part of a big movement like the 'Sox, or "Sens Nation" up here. If you're going to jump on a bandwagon, it's a lot more fun to jump on one with millions of people and untold energy and excitement. Y'no, as opposed to the "I enjoy wearing a good pair of slacks" movement.

Dan, for me it is way more that rooting for a big corporation. As a Steelers fan, man I can tell you that loyalties runs deep. Steelernation is a way of life, it brings families, communities and even counties together. It helps local businesses and pump money into the local economy. You should see the city of Pittsburgh on game day, hell even during the season. When the mills were closing, when things were going to hell in the 70's the Steelers gave a region of the state hope, something to stand behind and something to feel good about all the while their lives were going in the shitter.
It is a tie to home for me as well during game day I get calls from friends all over the world to talk about our black and gold. I grew up watching the Steelers, my dad grew up watching the Steelers and my grandpa was around when Rooney Sr. purchased the team with winnings from a horse race. It is not much different than rooting for your favorite driver or being loyal to your favorite brand of car.

Thats why I am a Steelers fan, reasons far deeper that a bandwagon or a corporation...Lots of folks dont get it, but at the same time...I find it hard to believe that people can't get behind a team or driver...

As a Steelers fan, I couldn't agree more. There are a lot of Steelers fans who aren't necessarily football fans, it is just something that brings everyone together, and gives everyone common ground in this world of tension and conflict.

I hate to admit it but im sorta a red sox fan, mainly because Pedroia plays for them, I got to watch him play college ball at ASU when I lived in Tempe AZ alot since I lived a couple miles away from the campus and stadium. I had to pass by the stadium everyday on the way home from work and if they were playing, I would stop by and watch the games for a lil bit before heading hom (i always had a couple hours to kill in the afternoon before the wife got home)

Re: My children are being brainwashed

It kept going into the weekend. We must have played wiffle ball for two hours in the backyard yesterday!

And it rubbed off on me too I guess. This was highly recommended in the local craft beer store. The other sixer I picked up was Brooklyn Pennant Pale Ale (always a favorite and baseball themed, but from a foreign land. At least it wasn't the Bronx.)

And then today we spent the whole day at the Museum of Science (kick-ass renovated planetarium btw) which was awesome and totally unrelated to the Red Sox brainwashing. Just an awesome day with just me and my girls.

Joe, you're a great guy and I hope that whatever brings you fun brings you fun. But I also don't root for any particular brand of car. Or any pro driver. At Maxton I want ALL of the drivers to do well. Like I said, I just don't get it. Not a sports fan.
