Re: You knew it was coming, Pistons??

So I got the crank, rods and wrist pins yesterday and was a little surprised at how small the wrist pins are, I'm talking like maybe 3/4"round and 2 1/4" long, that just seems really short and small to me. So my question is why so small??

weight and friction, also maybe cutting to run a certain frequency for vibration sake.

Are the rods narrow at the bottom because a cup set up will center the rod on the crank off the wrist pin.

Do I understand right your buying some old cup stuff?

Actually I bought some Cup stuff. ;)

Here's a pic of a rod and a pin, I was a little generous in the length of the pin, I would say they aren't even 2 inches long. And I really like that the rods have pin oilers. 8)

yeah its a coated pin with "forced" pin oiling make sure when you order your pistons you tell them what you have and the diameter of the pin. is that a 6.125 or 6.250 rod also they run some short CH pistons?

It's a 6.125 rod, and I have no idea what piston they ran, I'm going to contact the seller and see if he might know.

Ring package, compression height, and BOB weight will all need to be known for this. The turbo piston structure may be a issue, lots to keep in mind.

Re: You knew it was coming, Pistons??

I came across these pistons from Menard Competition, they are for a SB2. But I'm thinking this is the type of piston I have to use.

And according to my compression height calculator a 3.270 stroke with a 6.125 rod and a 9.025 deck height has a 1.26 compression height.

                    So how F'd am I?? ;)

I think 1.25" compression heights are very common... I do not know about the pin though....
you might get away with a standard "377" 6" rod piston? personally I'd call somebody....

also keep in mind the valve reliefs are going to need to fit your heads

Re: You knew it was coming, Pistons??

TC those Menard's pistons are just the style you'll need in the pin area for the rods/pins you have. The small pin is to reduce mass at the most important end of the assembly from a dynamic point of view.

I likely missed this but I don't know what type of head you plan to run, That SB2 stuff is awesome, not cheap but awesome in terms performance potential and the better the engine works N/A the better it'll be boosted and you won't have to spin it to make stupid power.

On that other topic your drag race rear end gears will likely end up in the 3.xx range. Ev Bernardo who brought a mid 8 second '98 Mustang with a twin turbo SBC to Drag week was running 3.70's IIRC. BTW the upper power limit on the TCI six speed is 800 ft. lbs. if you hit your power target you'll be well in excess of that.

The faster you want to go in different types of motor sports the more everything costs and the more compromises you'll have to make. That or swap out lots of parts like I'm doing to do the Run to the Coast instead of the 1/4 mile stuff. Brakes, transmission, springs, tires and wheels, suspension parts and a different pumpkin and axles. Easy, no? Similar drill for LSR racing.

As for the heads I'm thinking the AFR 220's with 75cc chambers.

Make sure you know before buying the pistons, the valve spacing on a cup engine is different that the std spacing on a 220.

I think with the boost you will want a full skirt, and a lower top ring than that set of pistons has.

I agree with Bill on the gears the cool thing is you can Drag Race it and only go to 4th maybe and then use 6th at LSR stuff
