now you need to talk with Todd and figure out how to brew fuel out in the desert so you can keep the BBC fleet going without single handedly supporting the local fuel station. ;)
There's always something new to learn.

Re: squirrel's 57 Chevy one ton

Speaking of a BBC, yesterday I got ahold of a guy in town who had a 79 454 suburban advertised. I paid him $350, drove the truck home (trans had high gear only), and pullled the motor and trans out. I hauled the remains to Tucson this morning and got almost all of my money back for scrap

THe engine runs ok, but I can hear a knock in it, not loud, but one of those deep knocks. I guess I'll pull the pan and see how the rod bearings look. One of these days.

The TH400 looks like it was rebuilt not too long ago, the case has a 67 CT case which means it's an early case from a truck. Acts like something is messed up inside...the output shaft will only turn in the forward direction....fluid smells nasty...but I can fix it, I have plenty of spare parts.

I pulled the valve covers and manifolds of the new 454, the date codes and casting numbers show the heads to be 1989, the block is 1991. And I found this on the side of the block:

More lame engine pics. There are no numbers stamped on the deck, I guess now I know why?

some dress up parts I had laying around:

number one plug had something stuck around the hex, plastic or ??? so it apparently didn't get changed recently. Still looks ok. My son was following on the ride home, said he didn't see any smoke come out the tailpipes. The engine smoked on the pass side head, it was very oily because the valve cover bolts were all loose. I guess I need to flip it over and see about that knock.

Any idea who the rebuilder was? Not that it matters - I'm guessing it might be out of warranty. Interesting data plate, though. I wonder if the internals measure as advertised.

                  Why ???

                  I like your engine cart!

Any concern about the .020 rod bearings on the dataplate and a possible knock? Knowing you though, you probably have a spare crank laying around :P

yup, heavy decking. And being a GM reman (reman for GM I mean) they probably have to remove the numbers?

I do happen to have a reground 20/20 crank laying around, how'd you know?

Chevy V8s have the engine numbers stamped on the block deck surface in front of the pass side head. The little area about 3" long and 1/2" wide that I cleaned and sanded smooth looking for numbers

congrats on your spiffy new GEN V block! Keep the timing chain cover & oil pan, or its dealer stuff. Couldn't find 'em anywhere when I did my Gen V.

Sierra Vista! Aaaaaaah, how I miss the dry heat. And solid sheetmetal on everything up to the age of Cortez soldier's armor... And even that stuff only has surface rust out there.

                            You keepin' the flatbed?
Yes, I'm a CarJunkie... How many times would YOU rebuild the same engine before getting a crate motor?

This is a Mark IV, not the Gen V. Although the part number is the same! But the block appears to be from 91, the last of the old style. And it even says Mk IV on the back of the block, cast into it. I guess they were already producing the V when it was made?

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna lose the flatbed, but I'm not sure what will go on instead. I have an 8' 59 fleetside bed, I could shorten the wheelbase and use that, or try to find another rough bed to use as a donor to add a foot to it (that would be neat), or I may do something else with the truck. We'll see.

I think I have enough bedsides and stuff to make a 9' stepside too.
