    97 GMC 1500 engine options...

The littlest brother's '97 shortbox finally bit the dust. What'd he do? Replaced it. What's wrong? Far as I can tell he put the 5.7 a little too far through it's paces (NO, I did NOT teach him that)...

Right now I'm looking at replacement crate engines. His 5.7 is EFH'd, sounds like it destroyed the lower end according to the mechanic and the two 'friends'. Either way, I've been digging around and I'm looking at the HP 383. Would that be a no-problem swap-in or is there a lot of computer crap that I'm about to get hit with? What would be the EASIEST swap-in? I'm going to have to pay for this one in advance, fly out to IL and bring it home.

Easiest would be to get a replacement motor for that truck from the dealer. It will drop right in and start right up, anything else will need computer work.

I'd get a reman for that year truck.. unless your ok with ecu issues..
the gm proformance parts 330hp crate is one piece rearmain seal.. but you'd have to change out the cam..
but might be cheaper than the g.m. replacement engine for that truck..
the ac delco reman engines do have a nice warranty..\
it's a 97 truck.. if it's beat you might try a local part house reman..

X2 on NAPA remans the only bad things if you read the fine print
you have to have the radiator cleaned, all new hoses ect ect ect to collect on the
warranty, but this is good stuff to do anyway

Agreed, and those are items that I replace, or at least recommend
when I do an engine swap, anyway.

The engine will have to be done by the dealership, I don't know the next time I can get to IL. Pretty much set on another L31, unless there's a GM P/N on the HT 383 and they'll do the swap. I'll be calling this week to get the estimate.

the computer will not like the HT 383 you would need to have the PCM reprogramed for it to be happy

you could just convert it to carb and get a TH400 or a 700-R4

then the truck wount care whats in it :D
