This morning, I drove over to see Rick at Culver City Trans to ask about the downshift switch. He is a great guy, super helpful, and honest. He's been working on automatic trannys since they first hit the streets. He told me to replace to the detent solenoid inside the transmission. Rick said it was easy to do myself.

Next, I headed over to Bob's Transmission Parts in the West Adams district to get one. They keep them in stock.

This is when the fun begins. Taking the pan off a hot trans full of hot fluid is always fun. One way to keep as little fluid as possible from getting in your hair and running down your arm into your armpit (don't you hate that feeling.) is to remove all the pan bolts except the two at the front. When you loosen them slowly the fluid will run out in a somewhat controlled manner.

Next, remove the filter. Careful, it's full of hot fluid as well. It's held in with one bolt on TH400's.

The oval thing with the wire coming out it is the detent solenoid. Its held on with two bolts. More fluid pours out when you remove it.

The new solenoid is a different design, but they both work the same way. They are essentially electric switches. That metal gasket is necessary so don't forget to reinstall it or your trans won't shift at all.

Here's the new solenoid installed and plugged in. I checked it's function before putting the pan back on. It's click is loud enough to hear if you are working by yourself.

    Success. It works now.

Nice work Scott!! You're the second guy I know this week that has changed one out on a TH400. A V8Buick guy was doing one this week, he said he got the solenoid from NAPA, iirc.
      Escaped on a technicality.

I'm not a fan of Napa anymore. Too much junk lately. I'd order one from Transtar first.

Scott - Hot tip of the week. Whenever I have an auto trans pan off it automatically (sorry) gets a drain plug welded in. My current design is to weld a 1/4" pipe coupler (cut in half) in off the side of the pan. Grind the coupler to fit the contour of the pan and weld it in place, then insert a short 1/4" nipple (acts as a drill guide) and drill thru it to make the drain hole. If there's room you can go with a bigger diameter, of course. Putting it on the side means that you can't drive over something and knock it off. Works great. The one on the Buzz Bomb doubles as the port for the trans temp gage - I just screw out the sensor to drain the oil.

Dan, I would first need a welder.

I don't bother putting drain plugs in trans pans....

The metal gasket is not supposed to be used with the newer replacement solenoid. The older ones have a metal disk that needs the metal gasket to seal it. The newer ones have a rubber seal built into the solenoid.

              So does it work now?

It works. I have it set up to activate the switch as the secondaries begin to open.

I got the fan shroud in today. I made a trade to another Impala owner for it. This shroud came off a '66 Impala with a 427 and a four core radiator. Somewhere out there is a dude trying to do a concours restoration looking desperately for one of these. I made four 3" spacers and ran 4" bolts through to the radiator's bolt holes. For now, I'm going to keep the '70's green plastic fan.

While at Famoso last weekend; I ran into Tim from Speedway Motors. I told him about my issues with their brand roller tip rockers. (one broke in two last Christmas on my trip to NorCal.) Even though their catalog and website says they don't guarantee speed parts, Tim will replace my broken rocker with a new one even though it's way past it's warranty period.

thats good service, but has the problem been fixed, a replacement thats no better than the one that failed isn't much good..

It must be tough always looking at the down side of everything.
I'd say it's fixed, he had 15 others that seemed to be fine.
