    Ford guy's 331 strocker ?

A friend of mine recently dropped a valve in his road race engine and needs to start from scratch. Looking at building a 331 strocker. Just need the basic info on it such as bore stroke rod length. He will be using a FMS 4 bolt block.

    Thanks

    mike.

I cheated and went directly to a 5.8, so I never messed with the strokers. These are SO common that someone on here likely has done one.

That's usually a .030" overbore with a 3.25" stroke, no? There are lots of aftermarket stroker cranks and crank / rod /piston packages available off the shelf for this combo in a small block Ford.

Not looking to buy a package, going to buy everything individually. I have looked and the packages and cant find one with the right compression ratio. I googled for this info and really didnt find any info I was looking for from a solid source. I found lots of 347 stuff but not much 331.

Crower, Eagle, SCAT, Howards, Probe Industries should have what he needs I think ...

I did a 347 for my 5.0L Mustang in the early 90s, but don't have any direct experience with a 331. The shorter stroke would probably be more suitable for a road-race car, as far as life goes. The 347s end up with the pin in the ring land, as you likely know.

I think there are also short rod 347 stokers that keep the pin out of the oil ring but I don't know much about them. I didn't do much research after the '65 Comet I was looking at sold. For a road race motor I'd make the rods as long as I could without putting the pin in the rings and then buy the nicest crank you can. There is a lot of torsional load on a roadracing crank as the engine loads and unloads for the corners

Besides, the big W makes more torque than even the stroked 5.0.
Makes for more power out of corners, IMO.
If a stroked 5.0 is your goal, stay on course.
The 347's tend to load the bores more, and as stated, it leaves the oil ring
lands in the pin, requiring buttons.
Most I've seen eat more oil than I'd like.

                    Re: Ford guy's 331 strocker ?

I'm gonna be catching some flack - but a stroked 302 will not be as good as a stock stroke 351W in a road race car - it'll be better. Smaller mains, shorter deck, lighter rotating assembly, higher RPM, and lighter overall, more room for decent headers, more hood clearance. Same power - power comes from cubes & airflow - 10 cubes ain't gonna show up the weight advantage and the same heads fit.

You can still build a kit up with a custom piston - you just have to ask the right questions to the right folks....

Definatly staying 302 based. My friend is just getting started with road racing in the American Iron series. With his power to weight ratio he is currently running in the extreme class. His setup works well it just need a few more hp to be competative. The 351 takes up to much space in the engine compartment and its to hard for a novice to make simple repairs at the track. Try changing header gaskets in a hurry with a good set of 351 headers in a fox body. Good luck!!!!! Also if Im not mistaken the 351 is heavier also, the back end is light enough as it is Id hate to see it with another 100+lbs on the front.

Mike's weight guesstimate is about right. I used Edelbrock heads partly to get the weight back to about normal, but I'm still about 30 lbs. heavier on the nose, but mine's not a track racer. I don't remember where I got the weight figures, but that's what "they" said (it was a chart on line someplace).
