The whole point of the hot rod hobby is to open the worm can, then refill with bigger, stronger worms.
understood..
but this is the daily, not the hot rod..
it fine by me..
I've done the cam thing in a 1997 dodge.. for a friend and he had 33'' and 4:11's and it didn't do anything but make the weak link known.. and that was the rings..
and this was on a 95k truck...
so , do bottom end.. what you thing gave up next , after telling him to do it while apart..
yup valve sealing..
if he wants more seat of pants.. and is keeping the 33"s
go straight for thr 4:56's and don't look back

Now that's a can worth opening! ;D From the looks of it, he did the junkyard version of what Mass-Flo EFI sells as a kit.
And they are mighty proud of that kit. For a Mopar small block...it'll set ya back $3,800 before taxes. ;)
If a get a Ram or Dakota, I might have to go this route. For a 'tron chaser like myself, this looks like fun!
Great info on how mild the stock cam is. If mine gets to where it I have to take the motor apart for some reason it'll get a better cam for sure.
Aircooled - who can tweak the speed density properly? Sounds like the way to go. Is the MOPAR magnum 'puter any better for tweaking or is it just as "protected"?
Thanks
Dan
Dan,
I really haven't paid much attention since I sold my 1994 Dakota in 1999. Back then, nobody could reflash the PCM. Now it looks like Superchips dealers can do 1996 and newer and BG automotive can flash 1992 and newer.
A few notes about my experience with the Mopar Performance computer. The callibration alone was good for 3/10's in the quarter. I got another 3/10's by shifting above the factory 5200 rev limit. The down side was that it would detonate on 87 octane and I didn't dare tow anything with it installed. Also, the Mopar Performance computer isn't any more tollerant of cam changes than the stock computer.
My ideal solution would be to Megasquirt the engine and get the stock computer reflashed to run the remainder of the truck and give a PASS result on the OBD-II emisison check.
Right now everything's working perfectly so I probably won't mess with it at this point. I do tow the race car trailer with it so I don't want to lose that ability, so in this case maybe stock is better (man, it hurts to say that!). Mine's a 1998 so maybe I should see what BG or Superchips has to offer - maybe they have a towing option. Mine likes at least mid-grade fuel now so there wouldn't be much change there. It's interesting that the owner's manual says to run regular and not to worry if it knocks a bit. I'm NOT comfortable with that!
I dont know if you fixed it yet but hughes engines makes a new plate for the intake that fixes the problem.as for the cam I would call again hughes engines those guys know small mopars better thananybody
