98 Grand Am GT 4cyl problems....

Ok So my wife drives a 98' Grand Am GT. Ive been having problems with this thing and have recently replaced the coil packs, plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, and idle air control valve. This is all because the car continues to drive perfectly fine at start up as well as when its warmed up, and then all of the sudden out of no where it idles all funky, the RPM drops down low and it will bog and die or just generally run like shit. Start it back up and its fine again. There are no codes coming up and theres no check engine light on....any ideas? Its got the 2.4L 4 cyl. twin cam motor. Just for reference i ohmed out the fuel injectors and they all come out between 4.9-6.0 ohms. I was told this is prefectly acceptable. I also "listened to them with a screw driver" and they all are fireing. Any ideas or trouble shooting points here because im at a complete loss of where to go now.....

Sounds like another IAC or vacuum leak issue.

why the new IAC ? maybe you have a crank sensor magnet getting weak , just a thought , I had one puke a few weeks ago on a saturn , when they get bad they stop running after 5 minutes -cool off , then start again

My mom's Dodge Caravan did the same thing but this is staying running it sounds like. Could be crank sensor or cam sensor magnets or hall effect switchs going bad, I have some sort of suspicion of the EGR for no reason I can name though.

EGR is a fair guess. If it's plugged with carbon it can cause rough idle and poor running. Usually it's fairly consistent, and throws a check engine light but not always. Wouldn't hurt to pull it and carb clean it and it's passages. (Providing of course that engine has one......I don't remember)

Autozone lists an EGR (EGR 1024) for a '98 Grand Am 2.4L but many a time have I seen their catalog's wrong.

Sounds like an ecu problem to me. Maybe bad ground. Shutting it off and turning it back on and having it work sounds like rebooting your computer.

I have had that type of problem with ign modules and also map sensors.

                      Ditto.

I highly doubt its an ECM issue.
I'd be hooking up a REAL scan tool, and looking
for the issue, while it may not turn on the SES light,
it may have still stored a code.

Codes aren't the whole story, but may point you in the right direction.

What do you mean by a real scan tool? Are there scan tools that "read better" than the little hand held ones? Where would I find one of these? A dealership? Ok I just thought of somthing here. I had to weld the exaust hanger back up on this car about a month ago. I did disconnect both battery cables from the battery. Could this have messed up the computer somehow?

                          No.

Disconnecting the battery on an OBD-2 vehicle, will not remove the code, or
                          cause any issues.
What I mean by a "real" scan tool, is not a "code reader"-those are worthless in my opinion.
I'm refferring to scan tools that give you actual data stream, so that you can actually catch an issue,
                          not just see a code.

Oh the reason I changed out the IACV is because I found alot of crap in the throttle body and cleaned the heck out of it. I then pulled out the IACV and cleaned the snot out of it and it seemed to help a bit more. I kind of figured it was just about shot and I was taking a stab in the dark.

I just thought of somthing else. This whole problem was much worse a few weeks ago before I cleaned the throttle body. This all started when my wifes starter was going bad in her car. It would turn over twice then the starter would spin off and stop turning the motor, so you had to try a good 5-6 times to get the car to run, when it would fire it smelled very rich in the car. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

Oh, where would I find one of these real scanners?? Also I didnt mean disconnecting the cables would cause a problem, I meant the welding may have caused a problem?
