I REALLY like cars - ALL cars. But that's CARS!!!! SUVs are NOT cars, they are trucks, generally driven by people with none of the skills required to drive a truck. Fuel thirsty, top heavy, dangerous pieces of junk. And heavy enough to take out innocent people on the expressway when Mom is texting her girlfriends. And then she rolls it and leaves her kids motherless. Did I mention that I don't like SUVs?

I like SUVs. The ones that are actually SUVs anyway. Like jeeps, or a ramcharger or bronco, even the first gen Durango, that one's seen some offroad time. I think SUVs have a purpose, and taking the kids to the mall ain't it. But I do like SUVs.

I used to be a bit puzzled about people who drive very large SUVs all the time. Then I went and bought a big block Suburban, and now I'm completely baffled about why anyone would drive one all the time. It's got its uses - camping, hauling stuff, towing - but it's unnerving to drive in traffic. I only use it for occasions that need it.

Yeah, that's it alright. I know we're not supposed to do Jap Crap here, but didn't Honda make that Element thing and then Toyota answered with the Scion? If at all possible, Toyauto won that lack-of-art contest hands down.

The Scion looks exactly like...it's the Dilbert car. I can picture his big flat head driving it with his stiff curvy crooked tie hanging out the window and not blowing in the wind at all. If Dilbert had a car, if would be the Scion.

Had some brain donor woman from Ohio almost run into me while on her phone in her Escalade on the way back from town tonight. She was all over the road and came into my lane when we got to the passing lane, its winter, we have high winds and plenty of snow, and she is yakking and not paying attention. I wanted to roll down the window and tell her to hang up and drive, but she probably would have run into them then. Seems its almost always a female in something like that who decides the space I am occupying is better than where she happens to be.. but that is getting off on a tangent about idiot operators we hate instead of cars we hate.

Did I mention I hate Omnis?

Toyota Highlanders and basically any SUV that can be had with fwd.

Dodge Ram pickups. IMO the douchiest trucks available on the market. Every one I see is just a pretty 'Friday Night' truck. I'd love to see one put to some real use. It seems that people buy pickups these days just to have a pickup. Plus the drivers of these things are always haulin' the mail to get somewhere and just generally driving like hell.

Re: The cars you love to hate...

In defense of my SUV purchase (99 durango), it was an SUV or minivan (2 kids + 2 big dogs).

Back in 99, we tested a Highlander. On the test drive, I floored it a couple times and it was quite lame. The salesman said the 4 cylinder version is almost as powerful. My wife and I both looked at each other (equally unimpressed with the power) and shook our heads. We drove the durango, knowing we were rolling the dice with quality, and left talking about colors.

Toyota probably knew about runaway vehicles back then and came out with the highlander so if something did happen to the accelerator pedal, you still wouldn't be breaking any speed limits and would be going slow enough to jump out. ;D

This turd-shaped wonder brings out the worst case of self righteousness in its drivers. By driving one, you are not just saving the world but you are also a better person to boot. Hell, your not even saving yourself any money when you figure the original buy in cost vs. your run of the mill compact car. What a scam!

I totally agree with you, can't figure out what Toyota was thinking when they were designing that car, although I admit the face does have a lot of similarities with my wife's shitsu, ... and not to mention I own 1 , it's my wifey's daily driver... good mileage though :D

I think BMW or Mercedes even have/had a version of one of these boxes out, or I've seen a couple good Scion's made up like one.

I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY support most of the compact suv and other crapboxes mentioned above, but as an employee of a us auto maker I must applaud Turbo Regal's take on the Prius.

To me - that thing is the very picture of the cow manure we're expected to believe as regular law abiding citizens.
If anyone with a shred of gray matter takes a pencil to the overall impact that car has on the environment and the buyers wallet - they simply can't buy that car! That on top of the fact that it's slightly less attractive than a fresh steaming pile of dog poop. Oh yea - I hate it even more because the hollywood elite think it's a green fashion statement.... like they live in anything that resembles the real world.

Hybrids - have their place - I think they make great short run delivery vehicles and would make excellent mail delivery vehicles, and city taxi's.

Plug in electrics - total waste of time for anything but an electric utilities fleet.

The one thing that makes damned good sense and can be employed on anything is engine stop/start.... especially for folks that get stuck in gridlock traffic - that's common sense that saves a lot of fuel and emissions. Those are the kind of solutions we need.
