Speedy, I think you make a good point. JRs persona is very down to earth. I'd rather have a beer with him than with Jimmy or Jeff. At least the media leads me to believe that. What I should do is have a scotch with Mark Martin.

Or they do know about them, and since they think cars sitting on the ground look kind of silly, they just don't have any use for bags.

Anyways, hydropneumatic is the way to go!

You can extend that comment to just about anything. If someone immediately comes out negative I tend to question the quality of their knowledge. An all out negative comment, without the backing of actual experience, is an ignorant comment.
          true some of the time..

Today, if I was a team owner, I'd hire him at the drop of a hat. I just wouldn't sign him to a long term contract.
Well, to be honest, back when JR left the struggling DEI, and if I'd have been Jack Roush and/or Ford, I'd have gone all out to sign JR because of his irrational popularity. I guess I got caught up in all of that family drama and the hype.

But today, now that he's shown he cannot compete in best-of-the-best equipment, I'd probably dump him.
sorry.. YOU might remember Rick Craven.. great driver.. then mover to hendrick with "the best equipment" but the bud car was always off the pace.... hendrick used that car and sponser money to prop up the whole group..
hendrick has always had one car that didn't run like the others from the same equipment :
and all with drivers that did very well for themselves before getting to hendrick..
                    see a pattern????
craven sufferd a bad head injury after an over the wall crash in larry headrick's 41 chev .. I dare say he was not the same driver after that , prior to that crash , ricky craven was the hottest thing in racing
craven gave us a great finish in the last pontiac win at darlington , driving cal wells grand prix , fender banging with turnip farmer kurt busch

                      5. Earnhardt: (Now we?re stepping on toes) The Earnhardts that were good have been dead for years. The ones remaining are hacks that occasionally win. It?s time to move on.

The real point of my comments on Earnhardt-ism apparently has been missed. JR's ridiculous popularity is motivated by something other than his declining on-track performances

Really dont see a relevant thought . Just like Speedzzter, some way to twist and turn his way out of something, and just one sided views. Very talented in the way of words though, although a little rough in the way of......well better let that one go.

Moving on to other things now.

"two wins in 11 seasons. Craven, of course, was seriously injured, which could have affected his career afterward."

I think I've covered your points. Crash or no crash, two wins doesn't really equate to the "hottest thing in racing." Moreover, JR doesn't really have much of a big, career-ending crash excuse (and yes I'm familiar with his highway accident). Besides, there's no cult of personality surrounding Craven (or the hundreds of other drivers that for a moment were the "hottest thing in racing")

The point of a columnist is to be provocative, clever and insightful. It builds site traffic for Brian and Chad and their advertisers. And it gets the readers "amped up."

I guess my original statement about Earnhardt worship was too subtle. But to be fair, you've got to read all of my Earnhardt comments on this thread together to see the proper context for my statement "The real point of my comments on Earnhardt-ism apparently has been missed."

Perhaps what I should have said was "Ralph and Dale are long dead (RIP). Dale Jr. Kerry and the rest of the Earnhardt kids mostly stink at racing. So just shut up about them already!" Perhaps that would have been blunt enough for the 100,000+ JR disciples that attend Talladega or the legions of 88 fans who snap up millions of dollars of JR swag.

An opinion/editorial piece is just that. The author putting forward an opinion in an effort to stimulate thought, or in the case of a message board, discussion.

Seems to have worked pretty effectively in this case. Besides, I don't see any of the whiners in this thread being invited to contribute to the blogs.

Thank goodness Brian and Chad runs this site, hate to see it any other way.

Jr. might wreck the first lap or blow the engine half way through, be he just landed the #2 spot for the Daytona 500 regardless of else.

                                sometimes..
                                sometimes it's an agenda..
and as far as the whiners.. most never been to a race.. and don't have a clue, and think you can just stuff anyone in a car and go..
Nascar teams are like any other company, you don't do as the boss wants, you pay one way or another..
Jr. mistake,, and no one can fault him for it.. was putting family, before the biz side of it.. and sticking with his crewchief..
hendrick, didn't like it.. and made him pay dearly for it..
now, Jr. doesn't have that issue, and will not get fined, black flaged, a talking to in the nascar trailer for having donuts on bothsides of the car..
                                he'll be fine...
the new, let the drivers drive.. is only gonna help smoke, JR. and others that didn't have steller years. as of late..
you can't get fined and black flaged for racing hard. and not have the sponser.. stay on board.. so.they drove around like good boys..
now that they can drive hard. and with no ill affects.. from doing so, other than blattantly dropping someone in the wall..
the ones that.. didn't have great years are gonna, run alot better.. cause they will not fear the back lash from the sponser..
It's sad the Robbie Gordon is now forced to run a select few races, instead of a full season.. as he.. can run, if he's alowed do, drive the wheels off the car.. instead of just.. making laps...
busch is gonna find, his last few years of.. being the only one ruff'n it up. is over. and will have the pipier to pay now. that drivers can . run harder after he's pushed them out of line. and better be able to drive with an eye on the mirror..
