What about using a cam with a lot of overlap? I know that kinda defeats the low end torque needed for a rock buggy (at least it can). But then again that overlap will bleed off some of the compression.
The overlap would also help if the engine inhaled a swig of water.
Cams with increased overlap on high compression engines were used in the early 70s when folks were trying to do mods to the old musclecar engines to get them to run on the lower octane gasoline that was coming out when lead was removed.
