Thanks!
Here's what I am learning after consulting with some super smart dudes. My carb has the old style bar boosters:
So I need to forget about numbers and just jet it where it runs right. The Holley book by Mike Urich & Bill Fisher published by HP Books (© 1994, 1987) says the annular booster uses a jet 4 or 5 sizes smaller than the bar booster. That is consistent with what I have noticed but compounding that is that fact that no two engines want the same jet size and the difference from one engine to another can be that much or more. Give it whatever jet it wants and expect its appetite to change if you change anything in the intake or exhaust or cam or ….Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

It warmed up enough this afternoon that I was able to pull the carb off and have a look. Pulled the carb apart and did see some sizable aluminum bits stuck in the gasket material that were not there before. I guess I did not get some of the passages I tapped either in the main body or in the metering block as clean as I should have. I'm betting that when the air filter sucked down it may have cleaned out the offending passage much like the trick DF did on the Roadkill episode with the Bronco and Suburban. I am also going to switch to press on jet extensions as the carb guys say the screw in ones have an adverse effect on flow.
I might see if I can borrow JWS4621's bore camera and take a look down the intake runners to see if I can see any gasket material out of place or obvious signs of oil suckage. Got to love technology!Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

"borescope" worth it's weight in gold! Hope you can get that and see if / where those gaskets moved.
Are your block or heads milled? I wonder if there's a geometry problem with the intake and head no longer being parallel? There's always something new to learn.Comment

I doubt there is a problem with them, because I figure there would be more evidence of them leaking. It's definitely worth a looky while the carb is off though.
Carb is definitely 100% clean inside and out now.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Yeah and it would not take much cloggage in an air bleed to really jack up the afr.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Scoped it at lunch. No visible signs of gasket horkage. Whoo hoo.
I also picked up some 11/32 brass tubing to make push-on jet extensions. $2.79 at the local hobby shop.Last edited by BBR; April 11, 2013, 10:12 AM.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Dan, the problem with a bore scope...is that you don't need it until you really need it.I'm still learningComment

I wish I had one, but I just borrow Jonathan's (JWS4621) whenever I need one. They are super handy for car stuff as well as home improvements. Mush easier to use than a flashlight and mirrors!
This one is really called an "inspection camera". Color lcd screen, etc. Very handy.Last edited by BBR; April 11, 2013, 10:15 AM.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
