The Mirada's Butt Lift
In preparation for the upcoming automotive Frankenstein session at Casa de Remy, I took a look at small things that I could do to prepare in advance so less time is spent on other crap and more time on the engine swap. First thing I noticed: both cars were sagging in the ass...and I have enough country boy in me that I don't like a saggin' ass. So what do I do?

And now, in it's new form...

Ride height is over 2.5" from original. It should settle about a quarter to half an inch, but for now it'll do.
Dunbar Spring in Phoenix did the re-arching. Damn good job, too, if I say so myself...Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!

It's mostly financial: can't afford all the cars, and the Mirada needs way too much to finish.Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!

stab my 383 and 727 in the MiradaIf you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark DonohueComment

I thought the Fury was going to the kid? I won't lie, the words "Big Block Imperial" just made me giggle a little...
Amazing twist: Last night I had someone offer me a '90 Suburban for the Mirada's shell. I told him after Oct. 20 to bring it by for a look. I'm really doubtful but I've seen some weird stuff happen before.Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!

A 'burban for a shell would be a good trade...I loved my mine, was an awesome truck. If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark DonohueComment

The Mirada-FINAL
Oddly, this is the first time seeing a project car go away isn't killing me. Normally, I'm the type of person that gets way to attached to a car and gets upset when it's time to let it go. I was infuriated, disappointed and sick to my stomach when my Diplomat project failed a couple of years back.
From start to end, the running theme has been "this car's second chance". It was a nightmare the night I picked it up. I shouldn't have driven it home under the best of circumstances. The original engine setup shouldn't have lasted as long as it did. The front end should have fallen off within a month. But somehow, not only did it live, but it thrived, and survived my daily use, outright abuse, and as time wore on, it seems that not only myself, but others, fell into the same charm that the Mirada has.
The car has had some great memories...epic burnouts, donuts, drifts...autocrossing...fire road bombing...canyon carving in the mountains...a cross-country roadtrip at the end of summer. How can that be ignored? Yes, the car has had it's faults. The f*cking dash lights never returned. The speedometer and odometer called it quits this year. The tach worked like a British auto worker-sometimes. Even when I blew up the 318, the car made it eleven miles and up one big-ass hill to my stepdad's before finally quitting.
I'll miss the Mirada to a degree, like I miss all of the cars in my past. I'm sure once I start driving the Imperial around I'll have to fight the urge to pull up the driver's side window the last 1/3 of travel. But the Mirada has been living on borrowed time for the last few years, and what a way to go out.
As for it's future, I do have a couple of offers on what's left. One is a young kid who wants to trade his '90 Suburban for something more muscle car-like. (note, I said "young".) The other option is I have a couple of dirt-track racers who are interested. Either way, i'll be fine with where it goes. If the kid takes it, hopefully he has the same laundry list of memories of the car I do. Hell, I might even throw in a cheat-sheet of what to hunt down. If the track guys get it, what better way to end it than a blaze of glory on a track?
I just wish the damn dash lights would've come on. Even for a minute.Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!
