    Re: Layin' 'glass...

i have built quite a few speaker boxes out of 'glass. I use a ring or a frame that i build with mdf or wood, then staple the mat to it to hold it in place, then wet it down with the resin and work the air bubbles out of it.
to make apart like you need, you will have to make a frame for the forward opening (behind the head light), then another for the rear opening, then staple your mat to it and resin it up. also, you don't have to use fiberglass mat, you can also use grill cloth or an old tee shirt instead to save a little money.

Once the resin hardens, you can cut the frames off with a cut-off wheel and shape the scoops however you want with the cut-off and sand it down smooth. You may want to design the frame into it though because this will give you a point to mount it or attach it to the car, otherwise, you'll risk busting or cracking the glass if you have to srew through it.(don't ask!)

you don't have to make a frame, but you will need something to hold the shape of the scoop for you because when the fiberglass "kicks", it will distort if there isn't anything to hold the shape.

Also, as far as cardboard goes, it will soak up the resign quite a bit, so if you can find something better, go for that instead

This thread is awesome. Smack, your post was full of good howto - thanks for that...

So, let me ask you 'glass guys a question. Can you make a fuel tank (gasoline) out of fiberglass? IT's a dumb queston but, (don't laugh) my riding mower needs a new fuel tank made - can you use fiberglass for a fuel tank?

On one of the model builder sites I found, the guy says to use clear packing tape on the cardboard to keep the resin from soaking in. I'm thinking I'll try the cardboard as the mold and glass around that. After it sets, I can cut the cardboard out of it.

I myself wouldn't attempt it. The chemical used to clean fiberglass tools and resin spills is acetone, I am not a chemist, but I am pretty sure that the gas would soften the fiberglass, maybe even melt it.

Another note on using a tee shirt or sheet, or especially flannel (flannel works really well!)

This is alot easier to us, as there will be less sanding to finish your project up once it dries, and it will allow the item you are making to be much thinner, which will help out in tight spaces. The cloth is alot stronger than you would think, but you will have to remember to include a mounting point in your creation to allow you to connect it to whatever you are mounting it to.

well happy 'glassin and be sure to have plenty of acetone to cool your hands down, 'cause that resin will light your ass up pretty quickly!. It will get so hot that you will think your hands are on fire.

I'm with Smack. I've built a bunch of speaker enclosures, and am actually doing kickpanels for the wagon now, and the t-shirt/grill cloth/sweatshirt is the way to go. This part doesn't need to be crazy strong to catch air and shove it into the engine.

BUT!!!! before you go to all this trouble, check out the stuff over at Spectre Performance. They have a bunch of different components for doing cold air kits, including aluminum and plastic flanges that can go into your core support. Check it out anyway. All the aluminum parts are good. I have a lot of experience using them, and they are on the LSR Camaro.

Here is a link to the catalog page with that stuff on it. Otherwise go to spectreperformance.com.

They make marine tanks out of glass all the time. Ethanol really screws with it though.

Well I have stopped buying stuff for cars I don't own. Is that a step in the right or wrong direction?

I see lots of homebuilt airplane guys are making tanks out of glass too. Did some reading and found some pretty cool methods out there...

                    Scott -

                    there's polyester resin, there's epoxy.

I would NOT use polyester resin for anything after using epoxy. I'm sure there is an epoxy resin available that will work just fine with gasoline.... I'm with Smack - I don't think polyester resin would work well at all.... or at least not for long.

Check out some of the sites I suggested earlier in the thread, I'm betting Paul Oman can steer you right.

For the mower - how about fabbing on an air brake can out of a semi - or some similar small metal tank that's readily available?

Unfortunately, the space for the fuel tank requires the tank itself to be a unique shape. I put slightly larger tires on the mower (a zero-turn Scag rider), which rubbed the fuel tank, so I removed the stocker, and put a smaller tank in it's place that I found in a lawnmower graveyard... it fits great but it's half the size of the original - the mower drinks about 4 gallons per hour, and runs only 90-120 minutes between fill ups currently. I could stretch it to 3-4 hours if I could fab a tank closer to the original size.
