Making Way For The New Garage..

Gotta make way for the new garage and I'm sick of the mess this possum infested tree makes. Sure it was a nice, but what a compromise.
Approximately 40 years old (as old as the house), it was a pity that this Canary Island Date Palm's end should come to this.
No one was willing to pay for the transplanting and transport fees even when the tree was offered for free.

It's pretty big, each rung on the ladder represents a foot.

Using a sling, I secured the tree from falling in the wrong direction. The center tie-down is the one pulling.

Cut out a wedge, increase tension on the pulling rope. then cut the back..

Don't laugh! Narelle's' electric toy chainsaw.. Did the trick though..:p

    Timber!

    Now the clean up! :

Too bad the Camaro isnt finished yet.You could have used it to tow the tree down ;D.With a smoky burnout first,of course.

And i know what you mean by clean up.Theres alot of work taking care of that tree.It doesnt seem like much, when its up in the air,but down on the ground.....

I'm surprised you got permission to cut it down ..
.. in our coucil, we had to have a permit, to cut down a native tree.
      ;)

How the hell are you getting the stump out of there? That thig IS deceptively massive.

How much stump do palms have? I thought they didn't have much underground but what do I know?

Show no mercy Steve, teach that tree a lesson. ;)

Nice to see things are coming along.

And ya, how do you plan on removing the stump?? I say rent a tractor and pull that F'er out.

I'll have the stump removed by a professional mob, but I still intend to cut it down a bit.. I have another small one and expect it will cost me about $500.
The total quote to drop the tree and remove it and it's stump was $1800. Doing most of it myself, I'm hoping to save some of that money and have a little fun. But now that that's over, it's hard work.. :-[

Steve, it's not a native tree. Melbourne is way too far south for one of these..

Tell your wife it honestly broke my heart to cut it down.. I put off cutting it for sometime, hoping that I'd get someone who was seriously interested in it. The tree was offered for free, hoping this would help, but instead, I got dicked around because no one needed to commit to a deposit.
No one, both amateurs and professionals, were willing to spend the required amount to relocate it.
                  It is pretty sad..

On the bright side.. New garage on the way! :D

Well, thank you very much Mr Hindsight. :P ;D
Man, believe me I know it..
Problem was back then when I started the resto, I had just bought the house. I wasn't in a position financially to borrow money for a garage of refinace a house that had zero capital gain.
As it is now, I should be able do this without the refinancing, or very much borrowing. ;)
