Re: What route do you want for a Power Tour?

I really like the idea of one starting in LA, and one starting in NY, but why not also have one start in FL, and in TX, and in MN. I'm thinking we meet in KS, OK, or somewhere central? Heck, then even cruise back together too, slightly different route! Need 5 cheif's, but how many here are willing....?

    OR...
1st year a West coast (WA to CA) top to bottom run...
2nd year an East Coast (ME to FL) top to bottom run...
3rd year a Midwest (MN to TX) top to bottom run
and let everyone in any area chose which they can do that year (or do each one).
Then CarJunkieTV would get a sampling and report on each area...

I'll have to say that since I've been doing Power Tours (I started in 99) I've driven through 45 of the lower 48 states. The longest Tour was in 2000. We started in San Berdoo CA and went to Panama City Beach FL

Well my point is/was that although lately the tour has been in the midwest, it has in the past been through almost every state.

Re: What route do you want for a Power Tour?

Let's leave the Power Tour concept to HOT ROD magazine,
and "resolve to evolve" into something(s) not yet done.
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's one framework to dissect & mod, as is the Car Junkie imperative!

            ================================================== ===============
            SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

Make it more of a major-league "CAR JUNKIE NATIONALS" big-time "bash" vs. a road-trip.

            Two beginning points:

San Diego Marina and Yankee Stadium. Join in along route(s) where most convenient to you.

Meet (approx.) mid-USA, at the most appropriate/useful/fun facility in "that" region.

Routes to the central destination to be determined by the West/East Coast facilitators.

Goal would be to have the maximum time in the middle to enjoy at a significant event,

(and not have to drive every day, a different bed every night, etcetera)

with folks participating from every part of the continent, not just a region.

            Significant event(s) at central destination:

Variety of: Shows & Races, Dynos, Vendor Clinics, etc., lots of "Hands-On" fun for spectators & participants.

Power Tours can get to be more of a repetitive endurance contest at times, w/each successive stop

somewhat like "Ground-Hog Day", with basically only the same traveling vendor shows at each juncture.

The central destination will offer much more opportunity for depth & diversity of

program scheduling from which to plan events, plus the core benefit(s) of allowing more time off-the-road.

Re: What route do you want for a Power Tour?

The "cruise from multiple points to a single destination" idea is good. It's also what Rod & Custom's Americruise event was. It had five cruises from all points in the country arriving in (most years) Lincoln, Nebraska. It was a pretty good event that got tangled up when Petersen Publishing was acquired by a company that already owned it's competition (McMullen.Argus), and put the McArgus people in charge. Then it became the Street Rodder/Classic Truck/Custom Classic Truck/Custom Rodder-and-oh-by-the-way-Rod&Custom tour. Identity was lost, readers wanted to attend an event instead of a marketing program, and it died. Then they brought it back. And now it just died again.

I'm not sure a lil' old web site like us could engineer a comeback with a different name. Maybe.

DF you are so right, people don't want to attend a marketing event, just cruise with friends and cars. I don't see why a small venture like carjunkie couldn't re-invent the cross country cruise. I'm sure you'd have plenty of backing from people on here. ;) I know we'd be in, we're tired of racing from one town to another just to see the same vendors, etc. :-\ Just my .02 worth.

Re: What route do you want for a Power Tour?

So how about a different "target vendor"?

What if we had a similar format ~250 miles a day - small towns and back roads - emphasis on the drive and then FOOD and BEVERAGE vendors in the event city. I know - the liability of a bunch of happy (drunk) car freaks hitting the streets after a few rounds would kill that idea. So how about a guarded impound and shuttle service to hotels? As far as routes - I like what used to be the old format where you started from where the last tour ended AND you went to different places each year. There are lots of places I would like to see besides where the tour has/is going 2007/2008.

that is part of the reason we may not do the whole tour this year, don't want to go back up the middle of the country again. i like the idea of having two starting points ending at a central location. i feel it does ruin an event when it does just become about money and not the people. i like it being under 250 miles between stops, that gives you more time to site see on the way there and once you get there. also to catch up with old and new freinds.

If you do Route 66, I'll volenteer as a guide from Cal thru Tx. I've ridden that route many times on my Harley and a few trips in the Vette. Arizona has the longest surviving section, and it's a bitchin' road!

I like the 'meet at a common destination' idea as well. You could vary the routes and the starting and ending points from year to year to keep things fresh. Perhaps a five or six year rotation of each.

You'd probably have to hold such an event at a state fairgrounds. Something with paved roads, but with plenty of trees and grassy areas as well.

I went to the CC Street Machine Nats at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in '77 and had a blast. Drank beer mostly, looked at cars secondly.

From what I recall, not many vendors there. It was, after all, almost thirty one years ago.
