I am sending a buddy of mine (I have to work), with cash in hand, to get it for me in the morning. Anything he needs to check before money changes hand? Would appreciate any advice.

That's pretty close to me. No idea of what to check for on those devils, though, besides the usual (check OP, compression, etc, if possible).

Yeah, it's worth it. But, you do need to check some stuff. Does your buddy have a borescope to try?Looking at the pistons would be good, because although they will take a lot if the tune is right, they are prone to cracking the skirts if not, or if there are a ton of miles. Check the spark plugs for evidence of nitrous or boost abuse too. If you are going to rebuild it and put new pistons in it anyway, you should be fine. Check the oil for water, and see if there is any sludge in the heads under the valve covers.

Good call on checking the oil. No chance to check compresion I'm sure. Not as much worried about the motor bieng bad as it not bieng the motor I'm thinking it is. Told him to take a magnet and check for an aluminum block.

Chad reminded me - I've been Jonesin' for a bore scope. We had a really good one at EPA and I've missed using it. Time to Google, I guess.

Caution. Something like 1 in 3 of the '97 through '98 ls1's had defective oil pumps. Poor machining by one of the three suppliers would cause the oil pressure relief valve to hang open, dropping idle pressure to under 5psi and wiping the bearings. I picked up one of these warantee take outs from a salvage yard. It had a December of '97 build date. Crankshaft wouldn't clean up at .030 under.

Although, if this engine really made it to 72,000 miles, it probalby has a good pump.
