Can you cut and reweld an aluminum driveshaft?

I have an aluminum driveshft from a Police Interceptor Crown Vic and want to know if it can be cut and rewelded without having to be heat treated again. I have been told that aluminum shafts are heat treated after assemby and futher welding will anneal the material and make it soft and subject to fatigue. Is this true? Has anyone successfully cut an aluminum shaft and had it stand up to racing applications?
    Thanks,
    Peter

you used to be able to buy a un welded shaft on one end from ford so cutting and rewelding should be easy for a driveshaft shop

Thanks for the replies........but my query was not how to do it, that is the easy part...... but rather the effect of welding an existing aluminum shaft. Will the anealing be affected?
          Thanks,
          Peter

Is it the MMX or the aluminum shaft? If its the MMX.... I don't know but I'd call a proffessional driveshaft shop like Denny's or Inland Empire. The regular aluminum should be fine if they know what they are doing but I'd call the experts again.

Re: Can you cut and reweld an aluminum driveshaft?

My aluminum shaft from Mark Williams is a one time deal. I was going to have it shortened but they said no, so I had to switch to a GM factory front yoke instead of the trick billet one to fit in its current configuration.

Probably that anealling issue. Best stay away from cutting an aluminum shaft!

I have an MMX shaft from Denny's. He told me that it was a one shot deal and could not be modified for length.

So the thing to figure out is what material the Crown Vic's shaft is made of.

I think the MMX shafts are labled Alcoa on them.
