    Saga of a fishing trip

So every year my Dad, Grandfather and I go meet some other guys to go fishing in Canada or the UP. This year was a UP year. Trip started out decent, or at least it seemed to. We made it about 90 miles, when I felt the truck start shuddering- so I lifted and started trying to find out what was wrong. Then I found out. The left wheel on our boat trailer decided that its time serving us done, and it was time to part company. In the most violent manner possible. It is not a good experience to be passed up by your wheel. So, we stopped, and began assessing the damages The wheels bolted on, so we took two bolts from the right wheel, bolt on the spare, inspected and repacked the wheel bearing, and then drove to the nearest town to a rather unfriendly NAPA auto parts, where I procured new lug bolts and a 4 way with which to tighten them. The rest of the trip was uneventful. We are now up here, and the fishing sucks. But we have fun anyway.

It's really no different than trying to glue them back on after she has her way.

what is it with this group and trailer tires?

did they send all the crappy tires to Michigan or what?

        How bad was the fender?

at least it didn't damage the boat.
There's always something new to learn.

          Walt,

Once while I was changing duty stations in the Navy, I was in a U-Haul truck towing my 1946 3/4 ton Chevy pickup (project) and one of the six lug rear wheels passed me on a bridge !! I didn't notice anything until I saw it go by and said to myself, "that looks like mine". Looked in the side view mirror and saw sparks coming from the rear of the Chevy. I pulled over and checked it out and was lucky that three nuts came off and the lug bolts were still in place (evenly spaced too) so with the spare tire and some lug nuts from the other wheels, I managed to get back on the road.

          Whew !!

I have a trailer that I was hauling home after purchase that one tire came off (at midnight so I never found it), and the other had two lug BOLTS holding it on..... stupid mistake on my part, the guy said "I had to borrow the tires off the trailer to move another trailer" I never checked to see if he'd tightened them after he put the tires back on..... 2nd time that's happened to me..... grumble.

That's why they have actual stickers for trailers, suggesting the lug nuts be watched...It's happened to me too. :D

Most of my trailer problems have been with "trailer-specific" tires swaying to uncontrollablity, or shredding to pieces. I have actually never had any that were OK. My travel trailer came with four new Carlisles and all were in tatters within 1,000 miles. The next-door neighbor had the same experience. Yes they were all within weight limits. Now I just get used LT radials and have never had a problem. Being on a trip and having to pull over every hundred miles with an exploded tire sucks to the extreme.

                Fortunate outcome on the trailer.

Enjoy those trips, they'll make great stories for your grandkids (and hopefully there'll still be some fish left for you to go with them)

As a kid, on the way home from trips like that, I always remember being rehearsed by my Dad and Grandad (and later in life by my father-in-law) on the exact "fishing stories " that would be told to the ladies on our return from the adventure. And often any fish we had were of the 'dock bought' variety ;D

                Thanks for the memories

We come for walleye- but we take anything that commit suicide on our hooks. The tire is toast- fender cut all through it all the way around. Today we are going to try and buy a new tire. The tires it has are P185/80 R13. To small for the boat, but it will be hard to find 13" LT. We will probably look for ST's instead. The fender had to be loved a little bit to clear the spare tire.

Bought two new tires to replace my two new tires that failed over the memorial day adventure. Had a blowout on the freeway on the rear axle of my Travel trailer. Pulled over swapped on the spare while the wife was speed dialing tire stores that had trailer tires near by that would fit. While inspecting the other tires to verify it was just a nail or freak occurrence I discovered that on the other side rear tire the tread was separating from the tire. Well all I could find local was a belle tire and that's where I bought these gems to begin with so needless to say I probably bought two more junk tires. After that the trip went well.

My Granddad made that trek with three of buddies every year from KC. Those old geezers were known as the wild bunch. My Dad went with twice and came home twice with stitches in an appendage.

One of my fondest memories was fishing in MN with my cousin, uncle, Dad, and Granddad.

Well, today is the last day of fishing. Not much exciting has happened, but there have been a few highlights. Yesterday, thunderstorms were starting to build. We were drifting along, when we started to here a loud ticking. It steadily increased in pace, and I started hunting down the sound. The sound was a spark jumping from a fishing pole that was sticking up in the air the a screw on the boat. NOT COOL!!! At that point we decided to make for the shore. Fast. My grand total of catches has been 2 small perch 1 small bass, and 1 hammerhandle northern.

Dude, do you mean the static charge in the ATMOSPHERE was discharging down through a fishing pole into the hull of the boat?!?

Holy change-my-underwear batman. That would freak me OUT.

It takes a TON of voltage to make a spark jump through air.
