I was wondering what years have the 8.5s in them? Also if it was in V6 models as well as the V8s. I seem to think that the 8.5 was in all of them from 71-81 but I'd like to know for sure

Funny Im searching for a rearend fix for my Regal.......I came across this info yesterday that said this "SLP used to sell a Dana 44 rear for the 1982-92 F-Bodies. It also had a 8.5" ring gear. It was the rear that came in the old 1LE cars. From what I remember, it was relatively inexpensive."
But I thought there were 7.5 10 bolt in some of those F-bodies..........
as far as I know the 7.5 was first used in F bodies in 82 (3rd gen), the 70 F bodies got the 8.2 or 12 bolt, and the 8.5 was used in most 71-81s
I got a 70 z28 12 bolt housing - one year only
600 takes it
As far as I know the 3rd gens came with the 7.5 or 9 bolt (87&^ in some models).Originally Posted by 383S-10
i believe all 72 and ups came 8.5" My 71 came with an 8.2. I think that was the last year for em though. The 8.5 with good parts, is very, very strong.
The weakling 7.5 came standard in the 82 and up f bodies. The aussie 9 bolt was available in the gta and iroc z's in the mid to late 80's but the 8.5 was killed off in 82 for f bodies. If it has a torque arm from the factory buy a better rear end.
Coming at you live from the birthplace of GM,Flint,Mi. Where your car is worth more than the property it's parked on.
I've never seen a 7.5" in a second gen and was always under the impression that all 2nd gens got the 8.5" after GM went to them in 71-72. I was surprised to find out that some of the late 70's X-bodies had 7.5's so I guess it's possible that they could have ended up in some F-bodies.
The 7.5" 10 bolt was upgraded to a 7-5/8" sometime in the late 80's and the axle splines were increased from 26 to 28. I believe some of the late G-bodies had these-hopefully someone here can confirm. The 8.5's were upgraded in the same way a little later.
The Dana 44's for 3rd gens were in the GMPP catalog at one time but never factory installed. They are extremely rare and rediculously expensive now when they do turn up. The BW 9 bolts are a 7-7/8" ring gear and a lot better piece than the 7.5" but they're too wide for a G-body and lack the upper control arm mounts.
Yeah the 7.5 started in the 76 year for the x-bodies. In 76 the 6 cylinder and 305 had the 7.5" but from 76-79 the V8 models had the 8.5". Thinking about the 6 banger Novas made me wonder if all the Camaros came with the 8.5".
