Well, here's a brief pictoral history of this car:

Started here, parts car is behind it.

Looked like this for about a year

Got some upgrades, like disk brakes

So then I pulled the head off:
oh yeah, suspected the full tank of fuel was bad about a month ago and pulled some timing out - obviously not enough.


What's hard to see in that picture is the right bank cam lobes are flat.



If I had a guess, number 5 had a vacuum leak. It wasn't bad until the fuel went bad.... dang it.

the detonation actually it bored a hole through all the cylinder walls and head on the left side (look at the head gasket). The block is junk, the head is junk.... fortunately I have another 400 block - but it and the crank are spare parts.....

As for next step I'm going with the 455.
I haven't built an intake in awhile and I don't like the SP4 or any other Buick intake - so I'll build my own. As for exhaust, I still like boost so I'm thinking of a large, single turbo off a duramax and make some headers to accomplish that task.

The SPX has a coolant passage under the intake runners you can run an rv water pump with some ice water through to get an extra cool intake charge (I'm wondering about using a trans cooler with water......) which would probably be good for a turbo'd engine. I'll be leaving it unhooked for the most part until I decide to start experimenting.

I'm thinking of building one like the SPX; but out of stainless steel. I have the fuel injection off the 454 truck motor - so I'll use bits and pieces from that to accomplish what you've built. Next step is to send a CAD drawing to a laser cutting company to cut out the pieces for the intake - and while they're at it, the exhaust flanges.... fun fun I should have those next week - provided I get off my tush and get to work.

Pulled the other head off - looks like other then #5; the pistons are fine. #6 was detonating - so lesson to the wise; fuel over the winter (even with fuel stabilizer) can go bad - and when you're running the ragged edge of Comp ratio; holes can happen.

Next up - the pickup gets its 454. I ordered the headers so I'll get that project mostly done (more importantly free up an engine stand).

The Buick probably won't see the road again until next summer.

Don't feel bad man, its not your fault, it was just that Buick rejecting that Chevy engine...lol. Now it will be pleased you are installing the correct heart transplant.
