The only real "fail" I've seen is the cookie cutter junk web sites that SI uses for the mags. Yes, it's a significant cost saving measure for them to run the same site blueprint for the mags - one admin can handle several sites easier. (not ever easy - but easier). But - they are JUNK. The content and style should reflect the host magazine's style and format. Thats what internet users expect. But it HARD to do that. Leads times become way short, shorter than mag leads. With reduced staff and limited income - it's just not practical to do it. I think CarJunkieTV had the right idea but market and investment timing killed the deal. Stores can use a web site as an extension of their real life store front. It may be that magazines cannot. Information travels too fast and people don't want to pay for it. TIME has the same problem - we were getting it, but by the time the rag came we'd read the good stuff on the TIME web site. So, what are we paying for? And if they charge to get on the web site, we'll just get it from CNN or Newsweek or a blog or... It's a no win and I wish I had a good answer - because if I did have a good answer, I could fill my shop with parts and retire LOL. Some places use partial free content with some of it as bait to get you to buy in to the "premium" content. That with ad revenue provides some income. Is it "the" model? I dunno.
here are some great street racing and nhra junior stock threads on the hamb
the regulars over there try to enforce the 'traditional' rule and demand a ban stick
they say they hate rat rods , all I see is rat rods
only a nerd worships something he claims to hate
ripping on a successful media man like DF is not smart
Possibly bad magazine ju-ju at Walmart today. Usually lots of car rags, went looking for HR Delux. Very few car rags on the shelf, less than half the usual. Maybe 12-15 tops. Including trucks. Women's mags at least 2-1 over the car/truck stuff. Nice things on their covers though ;)

So is blind devotion.
Lets face it - CarJunkie Failed! Period! If it hadn't failed we would still be on carjunkie and not on bangshift!
My understanding is that through no fault of DF's it went under because the money boys pulled the plug. I heard that it was on its way to being successful financially, but obviously someone up high got cold feet before it could turn a profit. Blame the economy, or timing, or whatever...but it did fail. I really wanted to see it succeed, just because there was nothing like it!
I might not agree with everything Ryan said, but he does make some very valid points about the future of print, and the unsuccessful attempts at bringing print based media online. Hopefully this bad economy will kill off the weaker mags, reduce the dilution of content, and make the remaining mags stronger. I still personally will be buying print because I like it.
wal mart purged most of the dirty hands car magazines
It's a scene repeated at many stores around here right now. The two book stores have a good selection, everything else is getting bare. I have not been able to find the new HR Delux anywhere.
I decided to see if I could find Car Craft and Hot Rod Deluxe at the newstand, while I was looking to see if Wally World had any ammo in today (they've been out for several months now).
I managed to pick up the last copy they had of the June Car Craft and the March edition of Hot Rod Deluxe (but was not very impressed with seeing the Orbitron on the cover - hope it gets better than that).
The guy was restocking the selves with the next month's editions, so if I enjoy them, I will go back tomorrow and pick up the next month's version.
