    Need cold-weather advice.

I'm screwed. It's gonna be 2 degrees this weekend where I'm going. I'm guessing that sandals and shorts won't work.

What do I do? How do you stand outside all day in 2-degree weather and live to tell about it?

long underwear, heavy boot socks, insulated coveralls and boots. don't leave any skin exposed for more than a few minutes. mechanix type gloves work if you need dexterity for a bit, but you'll need to warm the hands periodically. they fit inside ski gloves.

          Damn simple, brother....you DON'T.

Best I can offer you is this....

Look for boots with at least 100 grams of Thinsulate.....thermal socks.....thermal underwear and shirts.

Walls makes some relatively affordable insulated bibs....Carrhart is the best, but the price reflects it as well.

Layers....traps heat between, stay warmer longer.

Hot coffee or tea....cold drinks will screw you in more ways than one.

Have a source of heat/shelter relatively close.......even the best cold-weather gear only works for so long.

I keep seeing that little kid from "A Christmas Story" when I think of your ass on a frozen lake. It's all about layers dude and GOOD BOOTS. Once your feet get cold you are screwed royal.

That and when you're taking a whiz, don't leave your Peter out for too long, it's freeze and snap off. :D

              Hey look, it's DF!

                  Wherever are you going ?

I tried the longjohns bit in the winter, -4?F, and after moving around a little I was cooking.

Lots of thin layers. Just one or two heavy coats does not work very well, the cold gets in and body heat gets out too easy. Several thin layers does a much better job, plus you can always take one layer off if your dressed too warm. Think long-sleeve T's and long johns. I usually wear a regular t-shirt, a long sleeve t, then pile a couple sweatshirts on, then a heavy coat if necessary. And thinsulated boots. And mechanix gloves. And a beanie.

The best thing is to keep moving. Standing or sitting will bring pain. As long as you can walk around or otherwise keep your blood pumping, you'll be fine.

From my Michigan years - The guys have put you on the right path. I'd add - leave the truck running and don't hesitate to hop in from time to time to thaw out. Like every 5 minutes if need be - whatever it takes. There's no place for heros at those temps. If you're taking a Diesel truck, cardboard in front of the rad is a good idea - notice the truckers often have shutters and/or a flap (tonneau?) that snaps over the rad opening - same concept.

Good luck - I'm waiting for Spring.

Our friends to the north have a cool name for those hats. It's a Touk (pronounced twook). It sounds cooler telling a chick about your new Touk than your beanie..ha!

When working outside all day, which I did in a previous life as an industrial roofing contractor, this stuff is the best:

                            http://www.carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/s...tegoryId=10908

Fashionable footwear for women, men and kids. Find warm, comfortable boots, shoes and more from SOREL online.

                            Not real fashionable however. :D

A good thick hodie over yer head is about the best for keeping the noggin warm.

                            Good Luck.
