I sent you a PM. I agree with David - it's a great little car, and it don't need no stinkin' V8.

I think that as soon as he clicked "post" and the words "warmed up 250 with clifford intake" hit the internet Dan's version of Spidey sense started tingling.

I have a couple very good 250s and a 194 if you need any core parts (so you can leave your stocker on an engine stand somewhere unmolested). One might already be 0.030-over, though. Not sure where you live, but they can't be too hard to find.

Wow! Thanks for the offer. I am on the east coast, so shipping would be prohibitive. That's my plan though. Find a good 250 for cheap (it has a 230 now) and build it and then just swap it in. Keep the unmolested 230 just in case. This is my first post here and I've already had two offers to help with my project. Great stuff. Plus I like the positive feedback on my inline plans. I was beginning to waver and was thinking about a 327 again... But in my heart I know the six is right. It is a 131 series chevelle (absolute base model, post with a six). I have the build sheet and it shows NO FACTORY options. None. Base model engine (230). Base model trans (3sp Saginaw on column). I have the dealer invoice and it shows the only existing option, a DEALER INSTALLED AM radio. So, I'm not hung up on keeping it 100% original (but hope to not do any major cutting anywhere), but looking to make it a bit more interesting. People so far have had positive reaction to the little six ("I haven't seen one of those since...") so I figure a warmed up 250 is the logical first step. I guess the turbo'ed inliner is the more radical but logical progression...

Another option is a 292 inline six from a truck, bored to 302. They can run really good. They bolt in, but are taller. I know there are hood clearance problems on an early Camaro, but perhaps it fits in a Chevelle with the stock hood.
If you have turbo fear, plumbing a custom centrifugal blower could be cool, too.

It has begun. I just received delivery of a 250 inline six and Saginaw three-speed from a 74 C10. It supposedly has just over 50k miles on it (family owned truck) but hasn't run in over 15 years. It has oil in it and turns over freely so I'm hoping for the best. It's got a bunch of smog stuff on it which I plan to remove. Shouldn't be a problem except for the six holes in the head it will leave. Hopefully I can just screw in some plugs to fill the holes. Dan will probably chime in here. This is by far the biggest car project I've ever tackled, so I'll be asking for lots of help. I may also start a thread at www.inliners.org to get help from the experts over there. I figure this is a good way to start, because the original engine stays in the car for now and I can still drive it. And the 250 is simple and cheap so I can't screw up too bad. Here's the current status of the planning (it changes periodically): Leave the bottom end alone (unless I find direction or evidence to do otherwise). Send the head out for mild porting, larger valves, and milling for CR. Offenhauser 4bbl intake with Holley 390. Langdon's Stovebolt cast (split) exhaust manifolds. Paint the engine/head red (to be topic of another thread). Aluminum finned valve cover. Not sure about a cam swap. There's lots of discussion about an "RV" cam, but I need to learn more about it. Bolt it back up to one of the two three-speeds I now own. Hope to come away with a cool-looking engine with some better performance than the stock 230.

Great looking car. That was a hell of a find. I am very interested to see how the I-6 performs.

Dude, what a great car, I am stoked that your leaving the I6 in it...One of my favorite cars here in town was a 66/67 Nova at the local car cruses...he had a nice little I6 that had a 4brl and some other goodies...then he went a runied the car with a V8 swap...there is also a dude running a t-bucket out here with a chevy I6 and a turbo...it is so friggin cool....cant wait to see more....

There's a guy here who has a Chevy 2 wagon... it still has the original 4 banger in it! He was talking about a v-8 swap, so I let him know my opinion: It's a lot cooler with the original 4 cylinder engine. Everyone has a Nova with a v-8; be different, keep the 4 cyl. I don't think I convinced him.

Wow, that is such a cool car I can hardly stand it! Base model, brown paint, steelies, so ugly its beautiful! Good luck on the build, really glad you're keeping the six.
