  • My new favorite pic of my car!

Note the middle gauge! This was after idling in the driveway with the A/C cranked on high in 80*+, sun beating down, high humidity for over 40 minutes.

It's been quite a journey (this will be the 3rd summer with Vintage Air)... 3rd radiator... 2nd fan...

I think the vintage air screwed it up the most. The old factory air condenser was small and tucked up tight to the radiator. The vintage air condenser is bigger than the damn radiator and has to sit in front of the core support to fit, which creates a big gap between the condenser and radiator. I fixed that by cutting my core support to slip the radiator "behind" it and filled the gap with pipe insulation.

I had a champion 4 row, and it did OK with the same fan I have now, but it slowly crept to 210 under the same conditions last week. Not good. After people raving about the fat 1" wide row 2 row radiators from Engineered Cooling Products, I decided to check that out. I also added a 1/2" shroud for the Efan. The t-stat is a 185* unit and I have the fans set to come on at around 189-90* So far so good. I kept checking it every 10 minutes to see if it was at 200*+ yet but it stayed between 191-192*. The fan also shuts off at idle with the A/C off, something it never did with the 4 row.

Also had a little extra time to paint the rear drums after rebuilding the rear brakes, they look a lot better than they did before.

I tried water wetter in my jeep, which was having cooling issues because of a small radiator and airflow around a winch. I was shocked at the difference it made. I keep a spare bottle in all my vehicle fluid caches.
I have ADD with a lazy feature.....according to my wife!

Heat management is possibly the most important aspect of the heavy traffic and stand-stills common with Power Tour !

Yes... and my car was not up to snuff last year... I roasted in traffic with the A/C off and the heater on. I think my C4 going out was contributing to the overheating as well... but an hour in a half at nothing better than a crawl on I40 didn't help either. Quite a few times I had to pop it in N and rev the motor to 2K get it back down to normal for another 20 minutes... wasn't fun.

I also now have a manual T5 which has made a difference (not trying to cool trans fluid too) and all the changes above.

All this talk about traffic and overheating is making me twitch.

It's a simple fact of the tour. 5,000+ cars rolling through a small town or trying to get into a venue create a lot of traffic. Overheating is probably one of the biggest issue with classics on the tour.
