  • Electric water pumps on DW question

Fired and drove my 65 Pontiac for the first time yesterday. For reference, it's a 565 traditional Pontiac motor that made over 800 hp on the pump. Meziere 35 gpm electric water pump with a big aluminum radiator. Ran into a problem with the temps steadily climbing while going down the highway around 55 mph. 2500 or so rpm. After hitting 210(2miles), decided to turn around and get back home. When turning around, temp dropped back to 190 pretty quickly. Temps at idle are fine. I figured that going down the road it should run cooler, but it's the opposite. Called Meziere and they recommend their 55 gpm remote or me switching back to a manual pump. They sell a 42 gpm Pontiac street version, but said it wouldn't be big enough either. I have a good Edelbrock manual pump I'm going to swap out and try. Curious what gpm electric pumps you guys are successfully running and if what I ran into sounds familiar.

I'm going to get a 55gpm radiator mount electric water pump from Meziere with two 1" outlets for my Firebird. I am currently running a Davy(?) 17gpm pump and it is "okay" on my L6 engine. The real benefit to the higher gpm pump is the added system pressure to keep the steam bubbles in the head at bay.

CDMBill (Fowler) runs the remote one on some gianormus Ford engine making over 1,000HP N/A.

I have noticed my car will run warmer if there is a stiff wind and I am driving with the wind. Make a turn or turn around and it goes back to normal. I have a procomp electric pump that (knock on wood) has served me well since before DW12.

Is your fan turning the correct direction? I.E. not fighting the airflow from the vehicles speed? Just a thought.
Why think when you can be doing something fruitful?

          It's good. Double checked.

I really don't know what gpm it is supposed to be, but I suspect it is 35. It runs at a near constant 185 all the time. I did put a gutted thermostat in it to provide some back pressure in the block, and usually run water wetter in it, but that's pretty much it.

I run a meziere 35gpm pump. I have a lot less motor though, 364cid and 500hp on a good day if I am lucky. I have been fighting the car getting warm on the highway and not being able to recover if itdid get warm. Part of my problem is my 68 barracuda's design is the center of the grille is closed off which covers a good chunk of radiator. I sealed the bottom of the rad and the sides and that helped a few degrees because it helps force more air through the rad as opposed to around it. My recent change has been a fan upgrade. I haven't been on the highway yet but it really helped around town. My car is really sensitive to traffic on the highway. On dw12 I learned that if there was anything on the road in front me no matter how close it would pick up ten degrees.

                    Mine does it too. Irritating.

Do you have an air dam below the radiator? It really helps to create a low pressure area which moves air THROUGH the radiator and not just letting the air pile-up in front of it.

No air dam, but it's on the to do list.

I run a Meziere 55gpm on my 565 (BBC). Last year, in the 100+ temps we were subjected to, the Camaro was running at about 210 once warmed up, no fluctuations. However, I had an issue with my fan setup not covering the radiator core properly.

So for this year, I swapped to the biggest "direct fit" radiator I could use (still had to trim parts of the core support to fit it), and a properly designed fan setup. Additionally I added a factory front spoiler and a set of Mustang hood vents to help with airflow management. Early drive tests show a dramatic reduction in temps, but hopefully this weekend I can get a true read on the temps.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. You've pretty much confirmed what Meziere was telling me(especially you Bob). I've got the belt driven pump back on and ordered today a good Spal shroud with 2 fans to improve that situation too. After fixing the header leak, trans leak and a few other things hope to be back out again this weekend. See how she does....

it might be your shroud is "choking the air at highway speeds to go through a "slower" fan than the air coming past your grille. make sense?? we had to put "trap doors" in my friends shroud to let the air coming through to bypass the fan at highway speeds.
                              I hope that made sense,
