  • Tulsa "Toll Road" Challenge

Question for you local Tulsa guys. Do I still need to bring a pocket full of quarters for those unmanned toll booths that cost odd amounts of money and only take coins???

  • #2
I missed two of them.I'll pay double this year.

It will really depend on the route, but its a safe bet that you might want to have some coins in the car.

I'm going to buy a pikepass this year at least for the tow vehicle. It is a pain stopping all the toll booths coming from Amarillo.

I just signed up for pike pass. https://www.pikepass.com

You prepay $40 and can add up to 5 vehicles.

We travel through OK a couple times a year and the toll roads are a PITA. This will make it much nicer to not have to stop and dig around for $$$.

I almost never drive into or out of Tulsa on a toll road.

There are plenty of interesting two-lane blacktops to ride on around Tulsa (the Ozark Trail section of Old 66 just southwest of Sapulpa and the non-toll portion of U.S. 412 over to Arkansas (Alternative 412) are some of the most fun . . . Old 66 is a must (Take Frankoma Road/Southwest Boulevard (pre-50s 66) instead of the boring four-lane between Sapulpa and Tulsa ) . . .

The DW route people need their freakin' maps examined if they route us on any toll roads around Tulsa . . .

I wish I was on the DW route "committee" . . . I know where most all of the fun roads are in this year's trek . . . . Alas, the Californians probably won't find 'em and will bore us with too much interstate/toll road pabulum . . . .

I used to get crap at the midnight drags for having a pikepass on my windshield(the old ones were yellow and about the size of a cell phone). Then I would outrun them, but that was in the late 90s when a low 12 second daily driven street car was considered fast.

The thing I hate about Pike Pass is the few times I've tried to use it and Mrs. 38P has failed to "recharge" her account (Her cars always have a Pike Pass . . . and the "authorities" actually made me surrender the old honkin' "cell-phone" one once because OTA had entered a "pick up" order . . . . )

Ours is set up to renew automatically.

With the amount of tolls that have been paid in this state I fully expect them to start repaving them with quarters.

While I loved the back roads runs of DW11, I can understand that if people are being held later (larger number of cars) the "route committee" may opt for simpler/quicker directions... They may also want to see how fast Jake and others are willing to spin there engines. (ie. will he keep up with traffic or keep his engine RPMs in the "sane" range. )

Not to mention, I think in the past there has been some complaining about being sent down obscure routes or complaints if the directions were not SPOT by any interpretation... (ie. sending the cars mostly down an interstate is "easier"...)

Bottom line, no matter the route there will be complainers no matter the route selected. Personal opinion, it is generally a good idea to keep some cash and change on you during Drag Week... I have found the helpful on numerous occasions....

x2, though with 1,000-1,200 miles to play with, I'd think a good mix could be found in most places. Those "surprise" toll roads caught me off guard, but I was able to come up with enough change each time. Last year I left home with a bag of silver change for "just in case".
                            Escaped on a technicality.

                              LOL . . .

The Turner (1953) and Will Rogers (1957) . . . that is I-44 into and out of Tulsa . . . were supposed to be paid off long ago . . . .

SB 225 provided for construction of the Turner Turnpike only and stated that upon redemption of all bonds issued, the Turnpike could become a non-toll state highway, subject to acceptance by the State Highway Commission. SB 225 also provided, however, for the refunding of the bonds issued to construct the Turner Turnpike, which if done could lengthen the period of bonded indebtedness. Without refunding, the original bonds issued to construct the Turner Turnpike would have been retired in the third quarter of 1991

but the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority kept adding on turnpikes that probably won't ever be able to pay their own way (Chickasaw, Cimarron, Indian Nation . . . . )
