  • Bookend disasters..... or Drag Week, Day 6 lol

So, as most of you know, I managed to barf a head gasket or two on the Mustang during test-n-tune on Sunday. (Bookend #1) Despite having a NASCAR level pit crew of guys willing to help change them, I was pissed and acted like a jerk and put it on the trailer and I apologize for that.....

Then, I drove the Durango (affectionately known as "Heavy D") all week, had a freaking blast, met cool people, took a gazillion pics and basically had the time of my life.

Heading home today, I filled up with gas just before getting on the Turnpike in Edmond, OK. While accelerating back on the highway, the truck was in 1st, it revved to 4000ish, then shifted to 2nd for a couple of seconds, then proceeded to shift BACK TO 1ST, the mighty Magnum screamed like a weedeater and the sweet (sweet like candy, not sweet like 'awesome') smell of hot antifreeze permeated my nostrils..... Hello bookend #2.

    EFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFffffffffffff fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff.

Rolled up to an overpass and stopped under it. Popped the hood and there was coolant everywhere. FAIL. At first I thought it was a hose... uhhh nope. So out came the tools and I began exploratory surgery. State Trooper pulls up and tells me if I need roadside assistance to dial *55. He asks about the numbers on the car and I explain Drag Week to him and he blasts off.

After he leaves, I remember a friend from jr. high/ high school who I am friends with on Facebook lives in Edmond. I check Shawn's FB page, but he does not have his phone number on there. I send him a message thru FB and about 10 minutes later he calls. He just lives a couple of miles from where I was at!

5 minutes later he shows up and I pretty much have everything taken apart and decide the water pump bearings took a crap judging by the way the fan & pulley would flop around. lol I didn't have a tool to get the fan off the water pump or a piece of wire to thread thru the pulley to tie off to a bolt, so we lock everything up and head to Oreilly's. They had a bypass hose and water pump but didn't have the tool and neither did the 2 other parts stores we went to....

Undeterred, we decide we just need some wire.... but where to get wire??????? A DRY CLEANERS that's where! Stopped at the first dry cleaners we saw and snagged 4 wire hangers out of the wire hanger recycling bin! WIN!

Went back, swapped the pump, buttoned it all back up, filled it with antifreeze and let her rip. FIXED! Said our goodbye's and I hauled butt for Amarillo. Got here at 9, twelve hours after I left Topeka. What a day. lol

Heavy D down for the count.

    Shawn topping off the radiator.

Dang.. that's harsh. Yeah, bookends, I finally got it ... cooling issues. I bought my Thunderbird in Edmund, nice place to have a problem. Good to know you got it whooped roadside. Nex time I'll avoid the smartass comments about dragging the tow truck home with the race car. :|

It wouldn't have been too big of a deal IF the Mustang wasn't broke. I could have just unloaded it and gone for parts! But noooooo, busted-ass Durango with a busted-ass Mustang on the trailer!

The trooper probably thought I was nuts because I was smiling and babbling on about Drag Week while tearing the Durango down.

Glad you were able to smile about it. When we do this next year, you will fix your "racecar", did not want to force the issue right after meeting with you. The tools will come out and the car will be fixed whether you want to or not

No problem Jim! They were going on about how cool your car was because it had a BLOWER. I may have to put one on the Mustang to regain the 'coolness' crown at my house! haha

I'll third it... Drag Week WAS really fun!

Nice meeting you too! I really liked that you won the Mopar award. When they announced it, Dan and I looked at each other and said "I guess all the really fast mopars broke?" or something. It does seem to be mostly a chevy vs. ford shootout

Well crap that explains why I never got to see/ check the car out. I'm glad you got your problem fixed for the trip home.

I was having my own issues along the way and thought that's why I didn't see your Mustang along the way. Even with our issues, I still had a blast! I met some new people and got to put faces to some screen names. Overall I was just glad my Uncle and I made it through the whole week with all the new junk under my car. Glad you stopped by in the staging lanes too, hope you can make it back next year.

I made it home about 10:30 last night but I stopped at Summit in Sparks on the way for a few things and have plans to get it running better and fully tested for next year.

As always finally meeting people is the best part of Drag Week. I know I was not pleasant to be around Monday night as the alternator/battery/trailer repair dragged into the night and then it was over heating and I had to pull the plug.

Still a great week even though we decided to head back West after Amarillo.

Hey there, thanks for the suggestion and pulling those things out so quickly to try it. It was a valid idea and I'll probably add some kind of heat shielding on those fuel lines to follow up on that. To answer your question, no I didn't figure out what the problem was. I have a feeling it was a combo of vapor locking from the heat like so many others had and some ignition issues. We replaced the plugs once and that didn't help so I may start tomorrow checking out the plug wires one by one and then look at sending my 6AL box in for a checkup. It was great to meet you and thanks again for trying to help.
