  • We had no time to work on it last weekend so the VB is still in the box. Boo.

He still loves it. Some of his friends, and in particular, girls are not so keen on it though. Haha. That might not be a bad thing....

    • Jake loves this truck, but the lack of AC, seating, etc has somewhat of an issue. In addition, my wife really wanted him to have something more "normal".

So, I found a RIDICULOUSLY clean 1995 Jeep Cherokee SE on craigslist in Albuquerque. 4.0L, auto, 4x4, 112k miles, new BFG's, soft 8 wheels, tubular bumpers, new stock springs front and rear, roof rack, etc. It is soooooo clean inside and out. I felt like it should be in a museum. lol The owners were super cool folks and held it for a couple of days until we could make the 4 hour drive over. It was definitely worth the drive. My Dad and I got home at 10:30 last night and Jake came a runnin' when we pulled up. I'm going to take his truck as partial payment and then we are going to work out a payment plan to he can buy the Jeep from me.

My evil plan is a success. Haha j/k

We had such a strong headwind on the drive over there that we got better fuel mileage coming home, even with an additional 3300 lb brick on the trailer!

      Now for pics!

      • That is a great score, those are not easy to come by anymore. When I bought my XJ 13 years ago I had trouble finding one that was already lifted, now its hard to find a clean stock one haha. Those are good vehicles and that 4.0 is just getting warmed up. I broke a rod on mine with 190K(water logged) and when I took it apart it was so mint inside I got curious if it had been rebuilt or not. If the timing chain wasn't worn out I would have thought it was a reman.

        • Lack of A/C a problem? Tough crowd.

Is it still an OBD1 ECU? My '87 had the crap RENIX system with NO check engine light and no reliable means to read codes. I had been considering putting a Megasquirt in it. Then it developed an overheating problem and gave it to a co-worker that put a new radiator and cylinder head on it and now runs stronger than ever. I had offered to buy it back a few times to no avail, lol.

          Escaped on a technicality.

          • Yeah and I think the lack of safety equipment had some of their parents concerned. My wife was a large part of the motivation as well. Haha The F100 will still be available for him to drive if he wants to occasionally.

It has the OBD1 Chrysler MPFI. Which is great by me as I tend to like the dumber EFI systems better than the OBD2 stuff. Runs like a top and the AC blows cold.

              • Funny enough, I simply charged up the A/C system on my Jeep with 134a, no vacuuming, no changing seals, nothing, and it worked like a champ until the day I stopped driving it two years later. I was running the A/C going down the highway at 70mph the third time it overheated in spectacular fashion blowing up the pressured coolant surge tank. It was also the third time I drove it "HOT" until it literally quit running. Next day it fired up like nothing was wrong, lol, idiot light never came on, so clearly the engine was still good! Laser temp gun put the head at well over 300ºF. But I was done working on it, I went and bought a 2007 Silverado that was for sale in the Ely Times classifieds, but that Jeep was good in the snow, good on the trails, easy to park, and frankly had the comfiest bucket seats I think I've ever sat in (they were different than the ones in your picture).

                • Randal I think Recaro made the seats for lots of the XJs, A few friends of mine with the older ones had them and they are super comfy! From my experience if the renix system is acting up you just replace the TPS and it fixes it lol.

James, toss a spare crank sensor in the glove box as that is really the only kryptonite the chrysler MPFI has OBD I or II.

                  • Not only were the seats supportive, the seat had a rotational tilt, different than sliding forward and backward or adjusting the back, and was just comfortable. The seats could tilt back until you were practically set up to rocket into space, lol.

                    • Now that the truck is no longer a DD...... I can have some fun with it.

Some of the ideas that have swirled around my evil little mind.

                      1. leave it alone (lol right)
                      2. swap Mustang drive train in, build a small block (I have one) for the Mustang and throw a T5 in and make the Mustang a fun driver.
                      3. expand on the fact the truck drives nice, starts nice and is already EFI and add a couple of ebay GT45 turbos with a MS piggybacked to the EEC-VI

#3 is really sounding like a fun option because it wouldn't goof up the cruise-ability of the truck..... hehe

#2.. You probably will enjoy the mustang more.. But then there is nothing like a 12 lb sledge compared to a framing hammer..
                        #1 had me ROFLMFAO!

I wondered how well this was going over with the other parents for a few seconds... damn hooligan trucks. lol. But.. the lack of seating is a good thing for a while I think. Less distractions.

#3 because you've already done small blocks and big blocks and need something new to think about... and it would probably be enough thinking to postpone you from putting a Gen3 hemi in the Mustang.

Well, that, and all day TORQUE.

/edit - Getting old is hell... I think you already turbo'd the Ranger many moons ago?

                          • Haha yeah, the blue Ranger has a T3 on it and it was a blast! I was a total turbo noob back then!

I drove it to Lowes today and it's been a long time since I've had a project car/truck that I really really enjoy driving. This thing is fun. I'd drive it anywhere and for no reason at all. I dig it and with some moderate boost, it would be way off the fun scale.
