    CR 500

2004 CRF 250 frame and new bit that needs welded on

and some other minor bits to make this fit together

Hopefully, I can reuse the monoshock and forks from the 500 in the first itineration... we'll see

Starting with a bare frame? Yikes.

I was just thinking about all the peripheral parts that need to be attached to that bare frame that likely will not swap from the older frame.

Swingarm, linkage, shock, seat radiators, plastics, triples, foot pegs, rear brakes, airbox etc.

you forgot the seat frame and gas tank.

ummm.... I really don't feel like climbing up into storage to retrieve those bits until I need to.... do I need to to show you? First step is disassembly of enough engine bits to remove the engine and start with the frame fitting. Once I get the engine in the frame, I'll climb up into the loft to retrieve all the other bits.... I've been saving to do this for awhile - I only recently got the last bits so I can go forward.

Everything mechnical swaps over - it even uses the tires, wheels, monoshock, front suspension from the 500. About all I need to buy is the seat. That said, I'm not thrilled with the pink plastic; so that might be bought as well

And yet we listen to the voices in our heads prodding us on with new projects...........

I'll have to check my records, but this project predates the Buick for sure, and probably even the Spider.....

that's no shit right there - or the Fiat would have been finished LONG ago.

I'd wait for your retort (tort, taunt, whatever counselor... haha) but I'm gonna go to the garage now.

I was gonna ask about the seat frame, but those get bent so easily you might as well build a jig for it.

oh - hey - you probably already know about this page, but I'll toss it out there anyway just in case. www.bikebandit.com has parts breakdowns for tons of bikes.

Interesting project, to-date I have done a few motorcycles
I suspect the CR forks will bolt to the CRF frame with minimal issues, Hondas are remarkably consistent with things like this. I would however guess that the rear swing-arm will NOT bolt to the newer frame. And if it would I'm not sure it would work all that well.
Their has been much improvement/change in the last number of years on the rear suspension linkage and shock damping.

I had a CRF250 and it was a great bike, that Chassis and its geometry are amazing. Very easy bike to ride quickly. Should be a hoot with a CR500 plant in it if you can get it to work. I think the CR500 vibration will make your hands numb in about 10 minutes.

I've ridden a few widow-maker CR 500's in my day, and I think 4-storke technology is beyond what that old chain saw can do, BUT it's certainly interesting. What are you going to use it for, woods, MX, Desert??

                            I love my big 4-stroke 540cc KTM

I'm using the CRF 250R swing arm and link - I'm just using the monoshock from the 500

yeah, they vibrate; if it gets too bad, I'll have to do something about it. In the class I race in (old guy), 500s eat 450s for lunch - dropping 35 lbs off the bike should make that happen even easier - plus, my right leg is getting a bit soft (thus I can't go with a 450 - they're too easy to start).
