  • Sounds like to me Bob has the way to try to keep it in budget until a rear clip is in budget. Just saying.

Hey Bob, I see you noted you work on Mustangs. Just out of curiosity, just how square is the typical 60's Mustang?

I agree Silver68RT about stepping back. I found on my 66 it's very easy getting carried away with what you want to do. I had all sorts of dreams as to what I was going to do to my front suspension and brakes. But at the end of the day (meaning me) how are you ging to drive the car? Well I'm not planning on driving at triple digit speeds on the street or even do any sort of competitive track driving and the car is fairly light, so I don't need huge bakes. I don't need killer after market suspension parts like control arms since I'm not buying sticky track tires. I'm limited by the size of tires I can run, not very wide. So some simple and cheap mods will work very well for my intended use and they are well proven, time tested.

        • I'm trying to stick with the simple cheap time tested modifications as well - Bob - I will surely head your advice when it's time to hang the axle under this thing and figure out just how straight it isn't.

After hauling in a load of scrap and getting $196 for my troubles, I got a bit of work done on the car Saturday afternoon - didn't have any time to mess with it on Sunday.

            • Yea- the big old pipe cutter I have was too small! Had to borrow one - thankfully a friend of a friend is a pipe fitter and has a 4 cutting wheel Rigid that cuts all the way up to 4.5" pipe. It worked well. Still needed to clean up the cut ends to make things match up right.

The different in axle shaft length is 3" so we took 3" out of the long side tube.

I tacked it in place with the mig - but I will finish with the tig to get make sure I'm getting a good weld - the mig with .023 wire isn't appropriate for this wall thickness. I will probably cut the 3" section in the band saw and practice on it before I tig the real thing.

                  • Anybody got some 8.8 disc - caliper mounting brackets laying around they don't need? Looks like I'll be junkyarding it. I need one short side axle, and the disc brake mounts - I have - literally - a 5 gallon bucket of rear disc stuff from a swap meet - one set up from a versailles for a 9" and a pile of other calipers, brackets, rotors that are supposed to be for 8.8 - but the part that mounts the bracket to the axle flange? I got none of those.

We did test fit the short side axle into the diff - and by looking at the seal lip/rust line on the axle - it sticks out just a bit more on the cut down side than the other side - but there's plenty of bearing surface on the axle shaft.

                      • What is your rear end out of I think I have a Crown Vic with disc brakes on the rear at the shop that my son is going to derby and he uses a 9" rear end and scraps the stockers let me know if they will work for you.

                        • Greg - the crown vic disc brake stuff should work, the axle shafts won't be the right length - but that's OK - if he's just going to scrap it I'd definitely be interested!

I wonder if the rotors, calipers and mounting brackets would fit in two large flat rate boxes?

                          • Had a little time at the shop last night - pulled out the syncrowave and practiced on the 3" piece we cut out of the 8.8 tube
(about 1/4" wall), then got to welding on the real thing. According to the miller calculator - I needed a larger tungsten, but I made it work, not the prettiest - but hopefully strong enough.

                            • I've been watching this thread with interest. I didn't even know about this project until two days ago and I read most of it yesterday. Very fun read! I told Matt yesterday I'm extremely jealous. I'm just wondering how you're going to fit in the car. Are you going to sit in the back seat?

I suggest you install a center seat location similar to the McLaren GT. I mean, this car will basically have the same performance right?!?!? ;)
