This plan is evil generous, I would love to watch you dig into a G3 Hemi. Could probably push the engine back towards the firewall a bit too, as long as it's all custom anyway. the long term goal with my car is 3,000 pounds as well. I need to remove 180 more pounds, I have some big steel bits to replace, like bumper brackets and the heavy trans cross member, aftermarket seats may be lighter too...

Looks like the 09 and later 5.7L heads (Called "Eagle" heads) are the ones to get and the 03-08 5.7L blocks (non-VVT) are the ones to use along with a stock 6.1 crank (forged, same stroke as 5.7L). The later VVT engine blocks have a gigantic front journal for the cam, and cam cores are apparently very expensive for them. I have found some very reasonably priced rotator kits for these engines. Thinking I might just build one right the first time rather than trying to use a junkyard short block.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

I am way on the fence on my next engine build. My dad has offered up a race block to use should I stay old school small block mopar. Since I don't have any amazing cylinder heads the gen III is really really tempting.1968 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S 340 with a 360

The heads and hydraulic roller cam are what swayed me.
I think a nicely built G3 Hemi in a light car has the potential to really put the hurt on the SR SB N/A class.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

I'm thinking "undecided" at this point. However, I was looking at an interesting kit yesterday that allows you to run a Gen3 with a GM computer. This would further facilitate the use of an 4l80e should I choose to use one. GM stuff is cheap and there's a local shop that is well versed in tuning them if I decide it's more than I want to attempt.

Paul Cornman, 2014 SR SB NA 5 day average: 10.0294 134.398
Right on the hairy edge of needing both a cage and an NHRA license. Does the 6.1 block have the funky cam? You should be able to get it to 427" or just about the 430" max for SB. Every inch helps on that 700 hp NA quest, and a full weight Mustang with a cage is probably needing 700 hp for a 9.

Pre 2009 blocks all use a regular cam. I'm not building a car to take on the SR SB NA class. I'm building one to enjoy and whatever class it fits into is whebutre I will race if I do another Drag Week. But if I were, I'd build a super light Fox with a big inch G3 hemi and it would likely be a contender.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Looks pretty cool some guys where talking about using a GM computer and hptuners on a blown dohc ford. So as long as the inputs are right any Computer could work. I read about a ford EEC running a Mopar once a custom distributor was made. Would that be cheaper than a standalone (MS)

I don't know if it would be cheaper or not. The benefit to me would be the availability of top notch tuning help locally.Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.
