  • I have, but the opinions of their effectiveness are mixed.

The Griffin is wider, taller and thicker than the Howe I have now. Plus it was priced right. Can't upgrade without finding a deal, ya know!

It looks just like this one:

    *Should* be pretty easy swap.

    • I have an aluminum radiator that I'm hoping to use in the falcon - if it doesn't work - I'll keep this swap in mind - how much do you want for the one you're taking out?

      • Ever heard of a dual-pass radiator? That's what I went with, the inlet/outlet worked out great for my purposes, plus I figured I could use the extra cooling. Notice how the passenger side tank is split, the coolant goes in the top, crosses over to the other tank, drops to the bottom and crosses back over to the passenger side. Hence "Dual-pass", basically 2 radiators in one.

        • I have never used a dual pass. I guess that could be a plan of last resort!

I probably should have not used the Howe in the first place. It was the biggest that would physically fit in the Ranger, but the Mustang has a much wider space up front. The Howe has really slim tanks on it and the Griffin has much fatter tanks. I think this will definitely be an improvement in coolant volume, and cooling surface area as well as filling up the core support area much better.

At the very least, it will quench my mind's 'what if' that constantly torments me. haha

John, I bet the one you have will work great, but I will keep it handy in the event you need it.

This makes a lot of sense to me. Small volume would have a tough time "carrying" enough heat away.....

            • Well it certainly can't hurt!

Man, it was 105 degrees when I drove it home yesterday. Every damn surface in that thing was burning me. Took the t-tops out and had to handle them like hot potatoes. The shifter, steering wheel, door bar and window sill were all billion degrees trying to melt my flesh. The door bar in particular. I have GOT to put something on that thing!

              • That's one reason I don't like metal shifter handles - I prefer the white ball.

How about wrapping the door bar with white medical tape?

                  • thinking about electric A/C from a Prius, but for 500.00 I'll put a window unit in the back window and run a generator on the trailer. 106* today... September has me thinking SBF and a/c. Thirty years ago this wouldn't have bothered me!

The new rad holding more fluid sure can't hurt.

Ice water / fan / mister system?

I read somewhere that an oil cooler can reduce engine temps by 30%. In addition to that, a friend of mine had two chevrolet trucks, one the oil cooler was removed, the other it was left it (the 1st had a stick through the radiator early in its fleet life and they replaced it with a standard radiator). The truck with the oil cooler, lasted 250k miles, the one without 110k. I saw the inside of both motors, the difference really was amazing - bearings and cylinder wall looked new in the oil coolered motor; not so much in the other. Both trucks were in the same fleet, had the same abuse.

No generators going to the car allowed on Drag Week
                        Escaped on a technicality.

Why is that not allowed? so everyone has an alternator? how many solar panels would it take to keep the battery up?

                          • I'd have to look up the exact phrasing of the rule, but the trailer can't aid in charging, cooling, etc. the vehicle when going down the road. With all the electric water pumps, electric fuel pumps, fans etc, the electrical system on some cars is very very taxed, and often the cooling system very marginal.

                            • Makes me happy as heck that "HOT" here is 80* and " too dang hot" is 90*... I have rode bikes where the air provides no relief...
Stay cool!... I'll try to not moan about my "HOT" 80*...

I read that as cooling the vehicle, this is for the vehicle operator!! What about ducting the ac from the trailer to the car? Okay, screw it. I'm gonna get one of those cool hats. If you lose most of your body heat through your head, then cooling just your head should keep you comfortable? The cool hat is more "spirit of drag week" I think. I was kidding but I may give this cool hat idea some more thought. lol.

Medical tape - don't do it. I tried that once. The glue melts and you have an unholy mess to clean up. Same for baseball bat tape. Leather is oddly the best I've found. I'm thinking maybe a squirt bottle of water in a cooler and just spray/wipe everything down with cold water before driving it? I didn't have a/c for the first few years of driving and remember far too well being scalded by black vinyl steering wheels.

Deaf Bob... it's 80* at 6:30a.m. as I type this, with a charming 62% relative humidity! lol. Amarillo and Dallas are both heading to 102 today.
