    • Took the pump apart at lunch and went over all the flanges with a draw file to make sure they were nice and flat. Then I put the gaskets in, rtv'd them and bolted it all back together.

Tomorrow, I will pull the old pump and hopefully I'll have time to bolt the new one on.

Amazingly enough, I did not get rtv all over my clothes.

        • I usually have an itch on my nose or scalp as soon as I put a finger on the RTV to smooth it out. Best thing they did was put that stuff in caulking tubes - if you know you're going to use a lot in a reasonable amount of time - that's the way to go. I hate needing some and finding a dried up tube.

          • I'm sorry, I'm a bit of an ignoramus on this one. I realize you've moved on to a solution but I'm still not sure what's causing the problem.

Are you saying that the belt driven pump, at high rpm, created enough pressure at low temps to blow a high pressure radiator cap? Did you ever test the cap?

Humor me if you will, ignore me if I'm being a pain in the ass.

            • Radiator has a 16lb cap on the low pressure side of the cooling system. It is fine. Since my radiator cap is lower than my water neck on the intake manifold, I put in a Moroso fill cap adapter in the top radiator hose so I could completely fill the cooling system.

I put a 24 lb cap on it, but since this is the high pressure side of the cooling system, at 4000+ rpm, the belt driven pump is creating more than 24 lbs of cooling system pressure and subsequently pushes water past the cap.

I even installed a pressure gauge to watch the cooling system pressure fluctuate. At idle it is just a tick under 20 psi, and easily exceeds 24psi when you rev the engine which makes sense because liquids are incompressible.

My intent is to eliminate the pressure fluctuations in the cooling system and avoid a failure such as a blown core plug or blown heater hose cap, etc at high rpm.

                • Worked on it at lunch but quickly realized the bolts for the stock water pump are at least 1/2" too long. Crap.

Judging by the cracks in the bypass hose block off, it was going to be the next point of failure.

Old pump is off and plate is temporarily bolted in place.

                        • You said you might need a new hood, not sure if an 85 will work or if it tall enough.

                          • Yes, 83-86 all use the same hoods. Great price, too bad he's not local though.

Got a little time this weekend to work on the car in between working on house projects. Saturday I got the pump mounted (after $1.49 in new, shorter bolts) in spite of the HOWLING wind we had all pretty much all day. It finally settled in the evening and it was gorgeous outside. The install was pretty straight forward, with a couple of notable issues.

                            1. The lower hex bolt on the driver's side would hit the housing when you were tightening it down. This could have been prevented had I had used allen head bolts. I decided to just toss a couple of extra washers in and it worked fine.

                            2. The lower pump-housing to pump-elbow bolt interfered with the installation of the bolt mentioned above. No biggie really. Pull it out, insert other bolt, and put it back in.

                            3. There were no pump to plate gaskets provided. I had to make my own out of some old unused water pump gaskets.

                            4. The alternator bracket attaches to the lower bolt of the water pump elbow and the bracket required some trimming to fit properly.

Today, in spite of torrential wind and then later a light rain burst (I love the trees overhanging my driveway!), I fitted the alternator and adjusted the brackets so that the pulleys would like up. I also had to slightly drill out the mounting hole for the alternator so the larger Ford bolt would slide through. I ended up having a spacer the EXACT length I needed so the install went fairly quickly. I connected the alt to the battery with a nice 8 gauge wire I had left over from my car stereo days.

                            Things to still finish:

                            1. New belt - 15305
                            2. New lower rad hose - 1.75 x 1.75 x 17
                            3. Wire up pump relay

Can't wait to finish it up.

Oh yeah, I think I may have solved part of my hot start issue. When I was lying under the front of the car, I tugged on the starter cable and it appears that it is not tight at the starter. I will have the jack the car up to get to it and make 100% sure it is tight.

                            • Nice progress in spite of the weather - we have a wind advisorys on and off for days - I feel your pain. Sunday after church I carried a 4x8 sheet of osb down to the shed to replace a water logged piece - the wind just about took me and the osb for a ride.

You and the OSB both? SOB! (sorry, couldn't resist)

Looking good James. Is that low slung alt mount a factory deal or something you whipped up? I don't recall any factory low-slung alternators, only PS pumps....

I'd like to do something similar to the alt on mine, but I seem to have bigger fish to fry at the moment. Grrr....

I'll just have to settle for following along vicariously for the moment. Thanks!
