  • Aussie-style Drag Week

Just thought this would be of interest to some of you guys. Drag Challenge is something we did recently and unashamedly based on Hot Rod’s highly successful Drag Week. And, while Australia’s road rules are significantly more restrictive than those in the US, we thought a Drag Week-style event could work in Oz.

We kept the rules as loose as possible, essentially opening it up to any street-registered car that could do the trip. The kicker that separates Drag Challenge from any other event in Australia is that each car has to complete the road course under its own steam – no car trailers allowed! Any necessary gear has to be carried in the car, or in a trailer no more than 1.9m high.

The cars were divided up into simple classes: Radial Aspirated and Blown (for cars competing on radial tyres no bigger than 275) and Outlaw Aspirated and Blown (for cars running any other type of rubber, such as M/T streets or full slicks).

We had a blast. I don't think I can upload all the pics here, check out the website to see what we got up to. It actually mirrored the very first Drag Week in alot of ways; in that started and finished in very different places, small field and the quickest cars were in the mid 8sec zone. It's been pretty well received so we might go again bigger and better next year.

Yeah, we don't mind four doors down under. That probably stems from the fact that one our quickest muscle cars of the 70s was a sedan, the mighty Ford gtho Phase III. We also have alot of love for two doors but they just didn't make that many down under. Other than the Holden Monaro - which became your Pontiac GTO - no one has made a two door down under since 1977. So more often than not the two doors become show ponies and the four doors become racers. There are always exceptions. Mark Arblaster's (DW2014 guys will remember Mark as one half of the team with the orange Ford Capri) 1800hp Valiant hardtop, it wins show trophies wherever it goes and runs hard. Unfortunately it pushed out a head gasket after running 9.17 and limped to final trip to take the class win with a 11.8 running on six cylinders and with the procharger disconnected.

Sorry, just playing with my new phone and working out how to paste photos. Here's a few from our event, unfortunately I didn't get trackside (but our photographers did) so I've just got general shots on my phone.

Can you tell me what the different makes are in those pic's. I recognized the Mercury Capri but wondering what the other models are?

Sure, we've got Alysha standing in front of her 383 Chev powered HQ Holden sedan. They have a similar half chassis frame like a Camaro. The two blue cars are a Ford Capri on the right and Holden HQ Monaro on the left. The Capri has a 427ci Windsor and runs 9.6 naturally aspirated. The Monaro has a twin turbo LS motor and has run 9.2 according to the owner but the best we saw from it was 9.8. The pink car is a 1976 Holden Torana sedan, while the white one behind it is a 1981 Holden Commodore, both run twin turbo LS engines. The white car has run 7.97 on a 275 radial, while the pink Torana has gone 8.59 on the same. In the panoramic shot we've got. Holden VC Commodore sedan, Holden Torana hatch, Ford Capri, Holden Torana sedan, Holden HQ Monaro, Holden Torana, Holden VY Commodore ute, Holden HQ Sedan

Hoping to have some video up soon, just a teaser, but we had a film crew come along and they're producing a full 45min feature which should be available in a month or two.
