    diesel is awesome idea.
    except torque and light chassis.

you want fuel mileage carb is already there.

it will hold the world record in every direction with action...
alot more than pitter pattering clean hands on a keyboard looking at theories of electrons bouncing around with a wire pipe dream.

Am I the only one who has to setup every carb I own to use more to be bigger with increased fuel mileage?

    Too old for lies.

the 30s and 40s mpg quest and v8 does happen. Refer to anynne who was forced to drive a 70s car too lean.

my dad drove a 455 with 1.5 inch exhaust by the factory...20s mpg while it lasted.

laugh at the little 3 main boxer. I am trying to limit that one to no greater than 30mpg...with a monojet of all things. the nickname for that carb was "garden hose" for the stupid places they mounted it.

    learn the facts, build.

markets have the gadgets. run run away, they grab at you the most.

I do infact have a 255 with an erson tq20 camshaft in it. It made all the right v8 noises and such but never seemed to make v8 power.... Even after I efi'd it with 5.0 mustang stuff. It currently is doing what it does best.... Keeping the dirt below it from blowing.

The heads on a 255 are weird too. Oval intake ports and tiny valves and a great big "4.2L" cast into them.

LOL! ok if I were to have a diesel project I would like to get closer to 50 mpg due to fuel being higher. The VW 1.9 turbo can do that in a stock jetta. I dont see a lot of TDIs in the price range I would like to pay unless that a ton of miles on them. looks like the average price for the engine is $1800 with 150-200k miles. And the 4bt go for a pretty penny aswell. In my pipe dream I only want to spend 5k.

I would need to sell my DD before I could buy this.

                cummins 3.9 4bta P-pumped engine w/ford adapter and t-18 transmission $3500

i have a 1997 cummins 4bt engine out of a good running freightliner stepvan that i just pulled out last night (2/6/12) it is still bolted to a ford adapter plate and borg warner steel cased t-18 4 speed 2wd manual transmission. this is a complete unit with every thing on motor including intercooler, radiator, powersteering pump, waste gated turbo, down pipe, and even has wiring harness still hooked up where all you have to do is hook the cables to a battery and ignition switch. this engine has the highly desirable p7100 inline injection pump that is capable of making LOTS!!!! of horsepower with very few mods and free adjustments to the injection pump that i can show you how to do. this would be a great swap for a hot rod, rat rod, jeep, or just make a great MPG truck. if you want everything like it sits complete it is $3,500 or if i have to i can sell just the complete diesel engine for $3,000 and ford adapter plate and starter for $500 and t-18 manual for $400.

yea, diesels aint cheap, that's the problem.

Sometimes I think the only real practical way to get really good mpg - is to buy a used TDI! but I know they have problems too.

123 chassis mercedes can be good too - but they're getting older and harder to find parts for, and expensive, I learned my lesson on the newer MB diesel - NEVER AGAIN.

I had an 84 MB 300d run off wvo it only got 20mpg and was a turd. Something was wrong with it I drove a friends and his a ton more power. I dumped it. It taught me I know nothing about Diesel.

I have wondered if there was any merit at all in getting one of those olds diesel converted turds and putting a turbo on it....

in ages past, my dad was in love with the 5.7 and 6.2 diesels. He converted his 75 and then his 79 el camino to diesel. He never got that great of mileage. Granted, it was lots better than gas, but it was never above 30 mpg. For comparison sake, I had a 85 diesel Suburban with a 4" lift, 4x4 2.73 gears and routinely got 28 mpg on the highway, 21 around town. I've heard you can do pretty good with a 6.2 2wd suburban.

Now that I've put the turbo on my 6.2, I'll never convert another diesel truck to gas. It doesn't get much better mileage (20 mpg mixed driving - mostly city, 4.10 gears, mud tires), but it pulls as well as a 350 and gets twice the mpg. It also sounds pissed with the turbo, which was a nice added benefit. I bought the turbo kit (gale banks) used for $300 off CL - and there are lots of them out there.

Nice part about 6.2s most people hate them, so they're not that expensive - and their issues aren't terribly difficult to overcome (mostly, don't overheat it).

                              Ummm, you do know that 2200 x .001 = 2.2 right? Soooo 2.2+30 = 32.2mpg expected.

Edit: Ooops, saw dulcich already caught you on that.
