I've never done that to my coil/ compressor outside. Good info here.
I have, however, cleaned the coils inside the air handler a few times over the years. Dog hair, dust, carpet fibers, etc. will clog it up and not allow enough air to pass through it to do the proper heat exchange, which leads to it freezing up. Air doesn't pass through it at all when it freezes up, then when it thaws and the ice melts, can cause water damage. A dirty filter can also cause the coil to freeze up due to the same lack of enough air flow to exchange the heat.
What I've learned from HVAC experts: Use the pleated filters. Not the cheap flat ones. Not the washable ones. The pleated ones.
My business partner's dad was the head HVAC guy for a college around here, and has been in the A/C or refrigeration business for 40 plus years. He installed an AC unit in his house after moving in 30+ years ago, he uses only the pleated filters - and he has never needed to clean his coil.
