Re: Magazine's affect on interest in the hobby
There have to be magazines. My wife won't let me take the computer into the "reading" room. I need reading material at times.1964 Chevelle

Re: Magazine's affect on interest in the hobby
I hear ya, brother....I have a well-stocked "library'...LMAO
Ya know, the magazines were instrumental in developing my gearhead mindset, I won't deny that at all....but no way in hell I'd ditch it just because the rags went belly-up(and I hope that does NOT occur).
To the contrary, I'd offer that those whom would give up on the hobby/lifestyle just because of a lack of print material really weren't "car guys/gals" to begin with.Comment

Re: Magazine's effect on interest in the hobby
Anyone that craps at my house gets introduced to the hobby through an extensive library.! I like print just for the fact that holding the laptop while crapping is too hard ...and the wife would think I was on those "other" sites!
I subscribe to HR CC PHR SC Camaro Performers ...when I start finding too many articles that are the same in a couple of mags, I will quit a particular subscription and move to another...and on occasion I will stray to 4Wheeler magazine..."my name is Eric, and I like big trucks!" ..."Hi Eric! ...now just relax!"Comment

Re: Magazine's effect on interest in the hobby
Mags - especially HRM - had a lot to do with getting me interested in the first place, back in the 50's. But now I'll keep with this stupidity no matter what. So if all the mags died I'd still be interested.

Re: Magazine's effect on interest in the hobby
The choice for me was "Heck no!"
But I have to admit that my knowledge of what is current would probably suffer. My interest would not necessarily decrease, but my level of knowledge of current tech would not increase. Without new things to consider and/or mess with, my interest would likely become somewhat passive. The official Bangshift garage door guru. Re: Magazine's effect on interest in the hobby
Yeah - what he said. The info in the mags has enabled me to confidently tackle jobs I wouldn't have thought I could pull off. But hey - if a hack like frieburger could make it happen... I felt I could too. lol. But I can't (yet) get the pc in the can.... I like that paper mag each month...but then again, I do seem to get more an more tech tips from the net now...But we here are pc litterate. %60 of the population is still terrified of computers folks....mostly us old folks. It will happen that paper mags go away ( or get real expensive) I wouldn't bet real soon though. I just live for makin stuff....anything.Originally posted by White MonsterIt was cars that started it for me, even before I could read.
The magazines are just another tool in the box.

Re: Magazine's effect on interest in the hobby
I wouldn't quit for lack of magazines, but we're forgetting the real question-who would get into it without the magazines? Sure, some of us might be able to pass it down to our kids, but what about the kids that don't have hot rodder parents? If it weren't for Hot Rod magazine, I'd be worshipping douchebag mobility scooters (read: Italian supercars) like my brother told me to.Comment

Re: Magazine's effect on interest in the hobby
I think all too many times, the magazines cater to the manufacturers that spend big money on advertising, to the point where the tech articles are completely compromised. I'm not one to memorize details, but I've seen too many articles with false or extremely vague information. I just look at the pictures ;DOriginally posted by dagenestaAt what level do print magazines such as HR, CC, PHR, etc. keep you interested in rumbly shaky things?STUGOTSComment

Re: Magazine's effect on interest in the hobby
I've loved cars all my life. With that said we need magazines it's different than the net, more personable you kind of
get to know the guys writing the articles and they are way easier to look at on the throne or in a plane or when you are playing a little hookey at work.Comment
