Ok, I'm off on a crazy string again. This time its Powertours obscession with going around Chicago that has this one brewing. I hated driving around Chicago back in 2007 and I know a few people took the ferry across the late. This weekend in Chatanooga my wife spotted a DUKW sitting in a parking lot and wondered what "that monstrosity" was. As I explained it, she liked the idea and I though about about taking one across the lake for Powertour.

I was thinking a conversion to a closed cab so it'd be at least dry and warm if need be, replace the GMC 302 I6 with either a Duramax or Powerstroke deisel though I guess a Cummins would work too and potentially upgrade the transmission to something that would let me get to freeway speeds if that wouldn't overspeed the differentials. I think it would be awesome and I bet I use it for duck hunting as well. Just how seaworthy are these things?

Not very seaworthy.

I had a good friend who was a DUKW mechanic for "Ride the Ducks" when I lived in Branson, MO. First problem is weight and balance, a diesel is going to add weight in the wrong place. Second problem is, they're not seaworthy with the kind of waves you'll see in open water. Third issue I see, is that you can drive the NORTH way around lake Michigan and still get there faster than the speed of the DUKW on water.

That being said, it sounds like a fun project... haha

have a 1919 dodge touring car that we cut down kinda like a speedster with a 250 six with 3x2's and a glide just have to work on it
we had a mid 30's dodge or ???? sedan body we got once that was turned intoa touring car and we built a roadster out of it but i was only 16 and never finished it so those two are a lil out there the dodge i think when i finish it will be lucky to have $1200 in it counting tires it is all left overs from other projects makes it fun

Nothing too crazy I guess. I just want to build a car from the frame up from scratch. Minus the body. Build my own chassis and drop an odd body onto it. Mustang II or something like that.

Carbon fiber bodied, street-legal, turbo racing technology, lightest you can possibly build car.... in the shape of a 48 Buick Roadmaster or belly button 50 Merc.

Mid 90's all wheel drive suburban, twin turbo small block and all of the creature comforts. I know, not all that bizarre, but I want one.

I once drug home a '59 BMW Isetta that a guy wanted to put a 302 into. I sent him off to find a boat v-drive but I guess he didn't want to put any actual effort into it himself (I was only willing to play a "helper" role to limit legal exposure, I knew for sure he was gonna hurt himself in it). That one died on the vine, probably for the better.

I am going to build a mid-engine El Camino at some point, with manual trans and a custom v-drive at the tailgate. The mechanicals are all worked out, I just need to do the deed. One of these days...

any full sized wagon.. but for this.. I'll use a 70 velle wagon
ls zr1 engine with a 6 speed stick hooked to a beefed astro van all wheel drive case.. into 12 bolts
a/c power everything.. and heated seats..(front two)
all the abody handle'n tweaks..
and nice, stock looking 16 or 17" steel wheels. as wide as will fit..
smoked replacement glass in all of it.. but the front doors and windshield..
those just tinted..
and nothing that lets on.. what it's got.. even hub caps on the wheels..
total sleeper..
12 sec family hauler.. that get great mpg..
and wipe the backwards caps off the kids friend heads ;D
