View Full Version : Photo Posting 101

I might not be able to help out around here with lots of techie info BUT I know my way around photo hosting and posting.  Over the last couple of days I've noticed a few people mention they can't/don't know how to post photos SO I'll going to fill you in on a very easy way to host and post your own photos.

I use a place called Photobucket.com (http://Photobucket.com)  It's free, unless you go over their monthly allowance but we won't even worry about that right now.  The nice thing about photobucket is they "resize" the photo for you so if there are size requirements on the website you want to post your images on, you don't have to resize the photos first.

First step, go to Photobucket and register.  This gives you a blank album AND in that album you can create sub-albums.  This is an important step to stay organized.  I've been using this site for about 4 years and I wasn't organized at first and it was tough keeping everything straight and finding photos after awhile, so learn from my mistake.  For example, lets just say you have two cars, a Mustang and a Corvette.  Create a separate sub-album for each car, or like I do, each event I attend.  OR lets say you want to do a tech piece on rebuilding a trans, label an album with "Trans Rebuild" and put all the photos in there for easy access and reference later.

Once you've titled your sub-album, click on it so this exact sub-album is the one the photos are going to upload to this time.

Now your ready to upload a few photos.  See the word "bulk upload" in red?  Click on that, it gives you access to your photo folders on your hard drive.  Double click on the folder of photos you want to open.  See how they are all showing on the right of the page?  To select a photo click on it ONCE and it will show up on the bottom.  If you change your mind and don't want it chosen click on the photo again and it will disappear.  Check mark next to the photo means you've selected it, plus sign means you have not selected it.

After you've chosen a number of photos that you want to upload to this specific album then hit the big green "Upload" on the right.  You can watch it upload each photo.  Once completed, all those photos that you choose will be in your photobucket album.

Now you are ready to post some photos on this site. But before we start that I want to make sure your photos are going to post in a message board size.  Look up where you see the top "browse" word.  Right above that is the word "option" in blue.  Click on that.  It will give you options in the size that your photos will post.  You want to make sure you chose "message board" as your image size.  This will give you a nice large photo without being too big where you have to scroll back and forth to view it.

Now open up your sub-album.  See the 4 lines of text underneath each photo?  You are going to COPY the last one labled "IMG Code".  If you left click on it right at the very begining, it copies it without having to right click an draw you mouse across.  If you do have to drag your mouse to copy it make sure you copy the whole image tag.  If you leave off even one character, it won't work.

Now come over to the post you're making here on CarJunkieTV.  Start you thread, type in your text then hit ENTER so your on the next line, then right click and hit paste.  The whole image tag will appear.  Now hit enter again so your on the next line and either type more text or copy and paste another image.  You can post a number of images and all the text you want.

Most of the sites I'm familiar with allow 20 images per post BUT you can always reply to your own thread and make another post with more images.  Smilies usually count for an image.

Under no circumstances should you ever delete any of the photos you have in Photobucket, if you have posted those photos somewhere on the internet.  If you move or delete an image this breaks the link to the photo on the website you pasted the img tags to and everyone will then see a big red x.

Using Photobucket.com is free to use AND does not cost the site you're posting the photos to any additional costs for extra bandwidth usage.  Kinda like something for free.  ;D If you go way over the allotted bandwidth they then want you to pay.  I went a couple of years before I started paying, so don't even worry about that now.  I have over 10,000 photos on just one of my accounts there with almost 600,000 hits per month AND they still only charge me $20 PER YEAR! :o

Feel free to ask questions or to practice posting photos on this thread.  I will try to get to every question in a timely fashion.  I'm EST so you west coast folks keep that in mind.

Try Photobucket and you'll never have to worry about resizing photos again. You'll upload a picture one time and never have to upload it again PLUS it will never get deleted by a website to make room. Perfect for tech posts.

If you are trying to use the insert image tag on this site, someone else will have to help you out.

1st I have a photobucket account, I don't care to use it because it takes to long (I'm stuck with dial up here) and I have to open another web page when the stuff is right here in my computer. 2nd I post pictures on another site JUST like this one, same layout and everything. I don't think it's me because I'm under the required size but it bumps me anyhow.

This is what I get when I try to load a picture or my avatar. :'(

An Error Has Occurred!
Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow.

Please consult your server administrator for more information.

If it's a time out error, I agree, proabaly has to do with the fact it took too long to load.

I guess I kinda forget about dialup users nowdays. Sorry.

I will try using the "Insert Image" feature here tonight and see if I can figure out anything to help you.

I think the powers that be are aware of this problem. I'm thinking that a box needs to be checked by admin to allow you to upload images to the host server here. Or they may have limited server space and/or data transfer. Don't know, I ain't admin.

If you wanna insert pics into a post, without uploading them here as an attachment, get the URL to your hosted pic, be it from photobucket or whatever, then type in img, encasing img with the square [ ] brackets, then the url to the image, like http://orbitorange.net/images/firering.gif, then close the code by typing /img, again encasing /img with the square [ ] brackets.

This sequence oughta get your image up here into a post without a problem.

Here's an image I have hosted on my website. I inserted it using the technique and code described above.

http://orbitorange.net/images/firering.gif

In regards to avatars, make sure you size 'em to 128 x 128 px. Admin bumped the avatar size up from 65 x 65.

I used the same link in photobucket as I do to post a pic in the thread. Just smaller.

It's in your profile. Then on left there is a column on the left "modify profile". The second one down will allow you add info, avatar, and signature.

Put "img" with brackets on either side of it at the begining of the link and "/img" with brackets on either side of it at the end.
You can click the little picture icon (second button from the left on the second row) page where you post.
That was probably not helpful at all, sorry.
But I think I can do this:

for an avatar from photobucket paste the img code but erase the img part. paste it in the part above the browse button and the pic will come up before you save the profile change.

I tried uploading my avatar and it would not accept it, so I just put it on my own page and pasted the URL for it in the little box.

If you have a photo hosting account somewhere you should be able to do the same thing...just make an image that's 128 x 128 pixels in size, and put it on your host. Copy the link for it, one way is to just right click on the picture (on the web page you hosted it on) and then select "copy image location". Or copy the link that starts with http:// and ends with .jpg

and then go to the PROFILE tab near the top of this page, then on the left side go to "Forum Profile Information", then select "I have my own pic" and paste the http://....jpg link into the box, and save it by clicking "change profile" at the bottom of the page.

You are using a huge rectangular picture to fit in a tiny square space, it doesn't work too well. See if you can figure out how to crop the picture to a square shape, then resize it to 128 x 128 pixels. I dont know what photo software you have on your computer, so I can't really help you figure out how to do that...but maybe you could see if you can use the photo software's help function to learn how? it's worth taking the time to figure this stuff out. If you have a teenager around, that would be a good place to start looking for expertise :)

I guess I could ask the kids.... naaa. :o

squirrel
November 9th, 2007, 09:10 PM
If it's smaller than 128 x 128, it will look blurry, you need to get it the right size. When it's too small, the forum expands it to fill the space, and you lose detail.

there are a few tricks to posting an avatar. one trick is to make it a square image, if it's rectangular it will get distorted. another trick is to host it somewhere else, because you can't upload it to this forum, apparently. Another trick is to make it the right size, which is 128 x 128 pixels.

That should get you started, I hope!

sedan,

Tweaked yer pic just a bit, it's 128 px x 128 px square.

http://orbitorange.net/images/sd55.jpg

One thing the forum software will do is take whatever image you use, no matter the size, and resize it to the 128 px square size, which distorts the image somewhat.

Very kool.... Thanks for starting this thread for the cyber-challenged. Like Mike, I get the same message

"An Error Has Occurred! Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow. "

Yet, it appears instantly.... no real timeout error, and they are real small files. (75 x 75) BUT, I have been trying to upload directly from my hard drive. I'll give the Photobucket deal a try....

You have to click the "I have my own pic" button. Then paste the URL of the image (on photobucket) into the space next to where it says "I have my own pic".

DO NOT try to use the "I will upload my own picture" thing it does not work!

again, you need to have an image that is 128 x 128 pixes, SQUARE, or else it will get distorted. See how I added a wide blue band to the bottom of my avatar picture to make it square.

Hope this helps!

Her and her friends used to come by the house when we were getting the cars ready for Telegraph Rd. We used to tell them to come back in a few years when they were legal. I think she got her 68? Firebird convertible around her sixteenth birthday. A true gear head.

Help, Denise (or whoever)

I got the photobucket thing working, but I can't seem to toggle back and forth between PB and CarJunkies. So... I wrote a bit, copied in my first pic, then went back for the second pic (using "History on Safari to go back) and the post I was working on was gone. I'm guessing either:
!. There's a way to bring all the pics over at once, or
2. There's a way to toggle between the two sites.

I'm on a Mac, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a Mac Dan, I'm sorry, lay her to rest :'(

I imagine that your Mac should be able to open two internet windows(or what ever the Mac jargon is) at the same time and view photo bucket on one and car junkies on another. The other trick/lame work around I've used is opening a text editor at the same time, paste all the photo links into it, then go over to CarJunkieTV and copy them from the text editor over to the internet viewer. Best I can offer.

Hi Dan,
I'm on a Mac also.
1. When you have Safari open, go to the top and click on file.
2. Click on New Tab.
3. Type in www.photobucket.com
4. Find your photos, click the IMG Code
5. Click back to your original Tab, it will save what you were working on. Paste it were you need it.
6. Once you have the Tab deal figured out you can post really fast.
Have a great day!

Dan,
working on a Mac only makes it easier... ;D ;)

1. There's a way to bring all the pics over at once,

There is... ;)
- In your Photobucket-window, select the pics you would like to use in your posting.
- Then at the bottom of the page, you'll see a button which says "Generate HTML and IMG code"
- On the next screen you'll see, click once in side the appropiate window-area, which is usually the 4th from above if you're posting only a couple of pics,
or the 3rd from above if you're posting a whole bunch of pics which take a lot of loadingtime for everyone before they all show up.

Here's an example of the 3rd choice from above, the one with the thumbnail-pics;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/th_wheelyburnout.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/wheelyburnout.jpg)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/th_57PlymouthTulsa.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/57PlymouthTulsa.jpg)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/th_64limo.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/64limo.jpg)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/th_nobull2.gif (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/nobull2.gif)

... Which results in;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/th_wheelyburnout.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/wheelyburnout.jpg)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/th_57PlymouthTulsa.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/57PlymouthTulsa.jpg)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/th_Hemi.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/Hemi.jpg)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/th_nobull2.gif (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/MoparHemi/nobull2.gif)

You'll notice all the thumbnail-pics are shown vertically.
If you want to show them horizontally, you'll have manually remove the hard line-breaks after each [/url]-tag like below. Hopefully one day Photobucket will provide a better solution for this.

It was nice seeing you and your dad at Roush. I've got to check out your ride. Looks good in the signature photo. I'll bet I have some shots of the T/A. I'll have to visit the archives. Talked to Owen T the other day he's doing OK.
See you soon

Nice seeing you there too.

Big Olds has changed a bit since that signture photo was taken. This is what he looks like now. Photos were taken by my interior guy, FatLuckys in Austin, TX a week or so ago. I've got plans to do drop spindles next month and about 100 other things before the Detroit Autorama in March. See you there right??

The real question is WHY? ??? ???
I figured out how to use photobroke-it but I'm not going to spend any more hours loading pictures onto that site only to download them back here when the pictures are right here in my computer. I frequent another site that uses the same layout as this and I have my own gallery and can post ANY pictures in my computer.

A lot of the pictures I have may be able to help when people have problems or questions that would be easier to show than to describe.

I think the forum-admin here hasn't activated the image-upload yet, or at least not properly I guess.

This part of the error-message "Your attachment couldn't be saved." could also mean the upload-directory doesn't have the right permissions (777) yet for uploading... which I suspect.

I don't understand what you mean by having "to download them back here"?

My guess is that this site does not have the server capacity right now to be able to host images, it's a big step up in storage and bandwidth to do it. But if they're going to be serving videos in the near future, they might be wise to get image hosting figured out soon!

Dynoroom, once you upload to Photobucket ONCE those same photo "image tags" can be copied and pasted to any website. You do NOT have to load to any other site ever again. So in fact if you frequent more then one site like most of us do, you can post those same photos with two clicks of the mouse because all your doing is copying and pasting. Using Photobucket is actually EASIER then having to upload from your computer at every site you go to, to post those same photos.

its not ignorance, its the way this website is set up, not photo friendly, I can download my pics from my personal album to all other websites from gofastzone, to yellowbullet, to myspace with no problems...maybe these photobucket sites and such are making money off this , who knows, but I am with you on this subject....they need to change this site to allow all photos to download. The bottom line is I have hundreds of pictures on my computer. I don't want to/can't spend the hours to load them all on Photobucket. I'm still dial up, if that makes me a bastard child for this site when it goes video I guess I'll need to move on. I knew that was likely. But in the mean time uploading a picture to photobucket then posting it here is a waist of my time. I've done it and I don't really want to do it much more so the pictures I've posted thus far are about it.

By the way, thanks for the help to get this far posting pictures & my avatar, I didn't mean to go on a rant...

squirrel
December 11th, 2007, 08:50 AM
There are ways to make it easier with dialup, if you first resize the pictures to make them smaller they upload a LOT faster. irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) is a free program that can do batch resizing, but you do have to pay attention to what you're doing when you're using it--it's designed for relatively experienced computer users. There are also options in many photo editing programs to save photos for email or web use, these usually shrink them down so they upload pretty fast.

If you do get around to adding more photos to your mitechengines web page, you can link to them here, it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Photobucket is FREE and yes, it does take time. LESS time though I might re-state posting the photos ONE time to Photobucket ( OR any photo hosting site) then uploading to each and every website you want to post those photos on. Making a nice tech post, with photos, takes time. Everything in life takes time. This site, just like a "real" paper magazine would suck if there were no photos. Hundreds of photos on your computer.....I have thousands (10,599 to be exact) on Photobucket and couldn't be happier with the ease of which that site allows me to post photos all over the internet by just uploading ONCE to them. Dial-up is not your friend....a photo hosting site (once you learn how to use one) will eliminate most of your issues once you get your photos (the ones you want to post) loaded there.

Just to let y'all know how I FINALLY got some pics up. As mentioned, I did the Photobucket thing, which went pretty much to plan. Then couldn't find a way to toggle between Photobucket and CarJunkies. The brain cell (singular) finally lit up, and I signed onto Photobucket thru AOL (we have an AOL account) and CarJunkies thru Safari. Then it was EASY to jump back and forth, and there I was!

So thanks to all - your tips got me in the right direction.

Yes, you are correct in the fact any photo hosting site will work and folks should certainly pick one that suits their needs best. You've used your MYSPACE account to host your advatar but because my work place blocks myspace it's a big red X for myself as well as I'm sure others.

Photobucket offers the couple of options you've mentioned along with video hosting as well. For myself, I don't host anything on YOUTUBE because I have a feeling one of these days work is going to block that too because it's an excessive bandwidth hog.

Hi Denise,
I was trying to find some shots of the 50th anniversary T/A you bought from Nick. This was the only shot I found. Nick always had the best sound systems in his cars. The photo doesn't have the computer he built for the car in it. I don't know if you had it in the car when you bought it. The one thing that sticks in my mind, is the hack he put into the cruise control. You could punch 200 mph into the computer and hit the button. It would hold the throttle wide open trying to hit 200. That car was pretty sweet. He bought the car with a Pell grant he got for college. It was the first car I knew that always had Mobil 1 in it. 275,000 without a major engine repair.

Learned another interesting thing about photo posting today. I signed on the Photobucket today from AOL, and I couldn't get it to upload from my Mac to PB. In a fit of desperation, I signed in to PB from Safari and it worked fine. So somewhere between AOL, Roadrunner, and the Mac, there's some kind of digital squabble.

I have CarJunkies bookmarked on Safari, so I quit Safari and AOL, signed onto PB thru AOL and CarJunkies thru Safari. Evidently, you can download OK from PG thru AOL to CarJunkies, and everything worked just fine.

Maybe no one else will ever have this issue, but there you have it.

Photobucket "Slideshows" cannot be used for an avatar because it's based on 'Flash', which forum-software doesn't support as an avatar. (Mainly because it costs quite a lot of resources to view these items, especially if more than 1 person would have such an avatar.) An animated GIF will work ok for this purpose though.

But you could put this image into your avatar-field;

David, see how you have to scroll back and forth to see the whole photo? Follow these directions in your Photobucket.com album ONCE and all your photos will be viewed the perfect size on message boards without scrolling.

"But before we start that I want to make sure your photos are going to post in a message board size. Look up where you see the top "browse" word. Right above that is the word "option" in blue. Click on that. It will give you options in the size that your photos will post. You want to make sure you chose "message board" as your image size. This will give you a nice large photo without being too big where you have to scroll back and forth to view it."

If they ever let us post pictures from our computers instead of useing some alternate service it would make life so much easier & FASTERbecause I wouldn't have to keep 2 or more picture albums on different sites. >:(

Here's how I do it on other froum groups. It works slick....

Unfortunately, many of these programs get complicated and are difficult to master.

As an alternative, here is a little tool that Microsoft has available for Windows XP that will let you instantly resize a picture in a very simple fashion.

Microsoft has a drawer full of little utilities that never made it into the formal releases of Windows.
They call this collection Power Toys and they are available for personal use, without guarantee from Microsoft.

One of them is an Image Resizer for Windows XP. It is a handy little tool for those folks who want to take pictures from their digital camera and send them via e-mail or post them on a website...but don't have a Photo Editing program...or can't figure theirs out.

Most images today from digital cameras are far too big for web use.

The Image Resizer, when installed, enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.

First, download the file from this URL, and save on your desktop.

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ertoySetup.exe

When you have downloaded the file, close all programs and locate the file, ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe, on your desktop.

Double-click to launch the installer and follow the instructions, taking the default choice on each page.

When the installation completes, you are done. You can delete the file you downloaded from your desktop.

This little program modifies the right-click context menu such that, when you point to any standard image file, you will now see a choice in the menu called "Resize Pictures."

Try it...

Find an image file on your computer (.jpg or .bmp), point to the icon of the file and right-click.
Choose Resize picture, and you will see the following:

Choose a new picture size and click OK. The program will create ANOTHER image file in the same location with the same name, but with the 'size' term added to its file name. (e.g., "small", "medium", etc.)

For posting on the forum... the Small size is appropriate for Attachments, while the Medium or Large is correct for Gallery uploads.

You can customize the tool with the Advanced Button. When the Resize Picture window is displayed, hit Advanced and you will see:

This lets you pick a custom size.

It also lets you configure the program to MODIFY the original image, and not create a duplicate with the new size...NOT recommended unless you are sure you want to destroy the original image.

Have fun.... this should help new camera owners prep their pictures in a more standardized fashion.

Jim, I'm not a computer guy. All I can tell you is Powertoys is SO easy you won't believe it. Why do I need to take the pictures I already have on my hard drive, move them to Photobucket or wherever, open 2 windows, go back and forth dragging pictures.
All I do with Powertoys is open My Pictures, right click to size, and post, I'm done!

Photobucket is not hard, but it takes too much time! All my pictures are right here on my hard drive, why go someplace else? I know I must be hard headed but I use this process on other forums and it works great for me, the guy who knows nothing about computers.

Denise & or Jim, I'm trying to organize the pictures I do have in photobucket but I have a question. I've added several sub categories to my main page (I don't know if that's what they call it but it works for me) but if I take a picture, click on "move" it tells me the link will be broken. Does this mean all the pictures I've already posted will go away? Sure sounds like it.

Where does this turn in to a good thing.... ???

I don't use photobucket because I have my own web page, I just put my images on it and I can leave them or move them or whatever.

If you move images that are on photobucket then the links go bad, I suppose. So you need to plan ahead....and you don't realize this fact until you get pretty far along without the planning, and things go wrong like they are now.

Since you have your own web page (assuming this is yours? http://www.mitechengines.com/ ), it might be worth taking the effort to set up your own image directories there, then you can put the pictures there and link to them as needed and they should stay put.

Or you can keep pestering the folks who run this site to allow image uploads here.

Yes, if you delete or MOVE the image around in Photobucket from one album or sub-album you will break the link therefore anywhere on the internet that you posted that photo, it won't show up. That is exactly the reason in my directions I was very clear about organizing your albums right from the start. I was alittle unorganized at first till I got the hang of it.

Leave those photos where they are. Create your sub albums and re-download to the exact album you plan on using and use the new locations image tag to copy and paste to websites from this day forward. Eventually, once you don't think anyone is looking at the old links photos you can delete them.

Examples to help get organized; if you have 3 or 4 cars, make an album for each car.
I have started making an album for each year and in that year I have sub-albums for each event I attend.

I did none of these things 4 or 5 years ago when I started using Photobuckets and my lack of organization got out of control. Figure out what works best for you and go from there.

The BEST thing about using Photobucket, or any other photo hosting site is, once you get the photos uploaded to it (which you normally only have to do once) you can post the same photos over and over again all over the internet with a very simple cut and paste WITHOUT having to upload it from your computer to each and every site.

Short answer, computer crash = loss of photos. If you don't want to upload them all to a hosting site, at least burn copies onto a cd. It'd be a shame to lose all your photos.

Oh, and I use Yahoo's photo hosting site called Flickr. If you have a yahoo account, you can use your username and password so you don't have to set up a "new" account.

Something I havent seen mentioned in this thread (I may have missed it) is how easy it is to post pics you find on the internet, say, if you do a google image search.
You see a pic you like, right click on it.
Click "properties"
copy the address, starting with http, and ending with .jpg
click the insert image button, then paste the address between the img tags.

It's called "hot linking", and some sites don't allow it for some reason... but it works most of the time.

I just uploaded hundreds from the Detroit Autorama and had no issues. Do you perhaps have dialup? Or a Mac? If no to both of these, print my directions out and follow them step by step and in a matter of minutes your photos shoudl load.

Hi,
I am a new member. I have been trying to use photobucket and got to a point in the process that is a dead end. By the tutorial I am at the point of finding the word "option" above the word "browse". I have successfully downloaded my pics to an album but that is as far as I can get. I see my photo's but not the words. HELP!!!!!!!
Thanks,

THE EASIEST is www.tinypic.com You don't need all that PB stuff, you just load right out of your pictures. I resize all my photos first then I post in the forum, minimize it, go to tinypic, upload my photo, high light the web forum link, right click copy, go back to post, right click, Paste preview, IF THE PIC IS TOO BIG, I resize it, then I post. DONE!
PS: the credit goes to my 17 year old son who showed me how in less than 2 minutes.

You can't load one on to the website (I know it looks like you can...), what you have to do is take the web address of a picture (i.e. host the picture somewhere else on the web) and past it into the second option, and make sure the dot is next to the address when you click "OK"

I've seen several members state that resizing pictures to fit the screen is a pain-in-the-ass,
so I thought I would try to help out.

Most photo hosting sites (e.g. www.photobucket.com ), have a setting where you can automatically resize your pictures during upload, to a specific size for your uses.

On Photobucket, right below the Upload Images and Video button, is the text "Use CTRL to select multiple files (more options)", where by clicking the blue link "(more options)", you can setup the default picture size for all future uploads.

Select Large (640x480) by clicking the associated button, then click the "SAVE" button at the bottom of the screen.

WAHLAH, you are done and all future uploaded pictures will fit on the screen !
I hope this is helpful to some of you.
