Anyone got any really good street race stories?

This, and others I might tell are from many years ago when street racing was big fun, and very safe. Please don't confuse it with the vehicular stupidity that the kids are doing today.

    My Marvin story is....
A crowd gathers at our street race meeting place. I push my way through the crowd to see this clapped out mid 60's Plymouth/Dodge looking thing. Black primer, no front fenders, the roof sawed off, and a hundred rivets or screws holding the hood on semi permanant like. It's got big slicks on those white wagon wheels, sticking out of hacked quarter panels, and the words "the thing" stenciled in white on the doors. I say, this looks like some piece of shit Marvin would bring out. Marvin pushes his way through the crowd, and in his THICK N.Y. accent says, that's right ya focka, it's my cah, make me a focken race. I race him heads up with my big block 68 Camaro for $100 (big $$ in the mid 70's), and beat him. A few days later, he calls me on the phone, I want a focken rematch ya focka. Again I take his $100. To give relevance, I made $3 an hour as a mechanic then. Two days later, another $100 rematch and I win. These 2 rematches are mid week when Saturday's our normal night for racing. So, now it's the following Saturday, and Marvs there without "The Thing". I ask, where is it? He says, we nevah gonna talk about that focken cah. He says, I pried the hood off, took off my nitrous unit and lit the focken cah on fire in my shop parking lot. I'm laughing my ass off. He says, what tha fock ya laughin at? I said, that piece of shit was on NITROUS too?

      Heres one i got...

My best friend had just gotton his T-bird done- 95 4.6 with a higher stall, lightly modded trans, trak-lok rear, CAI. ran decent. one of the mufflers fell off, so he ripped both off until the shop that did his new system opened monday. so its saturday night, we decide to go for a cruise in it over to Ford to check out what they have- always saleens, roush's and shelby's. afterwards, we go up and down the road some- 4 lanes, normally lots of rice. stop lights ever 1/2 mile and generally deserted at 11pm. he runs it up to 60 or so at the lights when nobody is around. no ricers tonight, so he turns around to go home. well, we get to a stoplight and i notice whats next to us- a Neon. with a wing...those foglights..something shiney. uh oh. well, my buddy isnt as observent. he launches it easy figuring its an easy first kill for his bird...until that turbo spool. oh god, I laughed so hard at his face as that neon lost traction and blew by. he drove back to my house after that. he wont talk about that night much anymore!

Re: Anyone got any really good street race stories?

          Summer of '66
Buddy of mine (later was best man in my wedding) bought a new '66 Dodge
          Charger.
          Had a 383, automatic. Silver w/black interior.

We're coming back from the drive in late one summer night...two lane blacktop...headed
          back to town.
A '64 Vette is in front of us....we know the guy he's a local and have raced him before.
We pull along side in passing lane......we look at each other......give the signal and off we go.
We were neck n neck for quite awhile......nobody really pulling ahead......when a set of head
lights show up, on our side of the road.

I remember looking at the speedo at one time and we were doing about 115 mph.
I also remember wondering what a head on collision was going to feel like.

Well short story.....we had to leave the road.
Luckily it was a place called Rob Roy's Nursery.
Prolly looked like the Dukes of Hazzard leaving the road......we wiped out every shrub there but
the soft soil made for a good landing.

Got the car straightened up and headed back to town.

About 1:00 in the morning we get pulled over.....in town........by the local highway
          patrol.
Turns out the headlights were his........and we get a lecture.......told us he's still lookin
          for the Vette.
Buddy and I still talk about this to this day.

Blue, with lightning bolts painted on the sides? If yes, he was what we'd call a "squirrel". Someone that did stupid antics that jeopardized the safety of others. That jackass pulled out in front of me during a race years ago, and I almost plowed into him. We'd normally police the street races pretty good back then, but he had backed his van over the curb onto the dirt leading up to the railroad tracks out of site.

Re: Anyone got any really good street race stories?

This story took place on the 210 @ Yarnell before the freeway was completed. You'd go up the on-ramp, park, and there were just flashing lights on barracades behind you. Perfect, and cement for the more powerful cars to "hook" on. Anyway, there's this really nice, yellow V-8 Vega belonging to Mike G. Had a Grumpy Jenkins SBC as the rumor went, but we NEVER saw it go. One night, it's gonna race Mark W's Nova from L.A. (pretty sure of it being Mark). But, it's the bad ass Vega that we never saw, gonna go with Bob B driving. A famous Top Fuel crew chief at the time for a reptilian driver. Bob does his burnouts and dry hops, and I'm shaking from excitement this ####ing thing sounds so unreal in the late night quiet. It's a four gear car, and when the starter's hands drop, Bob pops the clutch at OMG RPM. The car shoots forward, stalls, and chirps to a hault. The seat bracket broke and tossed Bob into the back of the car. We never saw that car run. Has anyone? Was it quick?
BTW-my stories go back 20-35 years for the most part, not recently

One that sticks in my head is much like Groucho's first.......I had my Mustang out one weekend night. It was a bone stock GT/302/5 speed at the time. Some dude in a 67 or 68 Mustang pulls up next to me at a red light, revs it up and it's on. We go out to our drag strip, Airport Road on the edge of town. This dudes car is camming and loping like a bastard so I figured I'd have no chance. I end up beating him by 3 or 4 lengths. He gets pissed and starts yelling and making excuses. He jumps out of the car, gets in the trunk and does something and I couldn't tell what it was. Figured he turned the NOS on. We do it again and I beat him just as bad. He gets even more pissed and screams at me that we had to do it again. He gets in the trunk again and does something. On the 3rd race, I beat him a little worse. This dude is fuming mad, just ranting and raving and cussing up a storm. He left after that and I never saw him or that Mustang ever again.

Not a bad idea, but I didn't know what he would have done to me if I had gotten out of my car. He was a rough lookin dude and I was trying to hide the fact that I was laughing!

It was 1977, and I had a pretty hot/modified Boss 351 Mustang which ran low 12s (at that time a low 12 street car was pretty darn hot). We'd cruise Central Ave. in Phoenix. Had my freakin' doors blown off by a '67 Goat. Later that evening, I saw the car parked in a lot with its hood opened along with some other hotrods. A parked down the street, and walked over to take a look.

Son of a bitch. All I saw were fat headers, single-plane intake, Holley double-pumper and a freakin' nitrous set up! Damn... nitrous. Nitrous was only starting to make the street racing seen back then. I learned my lesson then... nitrous was/is the answer to fooling the guy in the next lane of a street race!!!
                          Nitrous, baby!!...

Nothing too exciting. Both involve my 85, 5.0 LX Mustang. At the time they were pretty hot cars when the roller cam motors first came out. The first was going to work one morning. I'm in the RH lane and this guy in a late 70's Z28 with T tops pulls up along side me in the LH lane. He wants a piece of me, so I drop it down a gear or two and flat leave him like he has a anchor. The speed limit was 45 with a curve and a light coming up. I back out of it and this guy goes blowing by. Just as he passes me, his right T top blows off his car. All in low motion, I see this T top floating in the air coming straight at my side of the windshield. I guess it caught the slip stream over my car and safely clear me. I looked in the rear view mirror and see the T top hit the road and blow up like a bomb. The guy with the Z28 slowed down like he he was going to pick up what's left of his T top but realizes there's nothing to pick up and just kept going.

The next was really funny. I use to belong to the Garden State Mustang club. We had planned to meet the Garden State Chevelle club to race at Friday night test and tune at Englishtown in NJ. My brother is with me in the staging line when this grease ball with a clapped out early 70' Nova and asks me if I want to buy a real race car. The guy goes on to tell me that he has $4K into the motor. I blew the guy off. Later my brother come back to me and tells me that the "real" race car ran in the high 16's in the low 80 MPH range! IIRC it was something like 16.82 ET.

Friend of mine snuck out his brothers SuperBee and wanted to race me in my Dart.We went to a street on the outskirts of town to hook them up. I checked all the side streets for cops or other cars and didnt see anyone else around. We turn around and take off.First gear I can see him in the mirror.Second gear Im still pulling him but hes catching up.I glance at the street that marks the quarter mile and there is a car with its lights on and it has plenty of time to pull onto the road we are on.It doesnt.Instinct tells me to shut it down and I do.Its a cop.My friend goes FLYING by.Cop pulls out and pulls him over as I turn off on a side street.I double back and drive by as the cop is writing my friend a ticket and I wave as I go by.For some reason he never got to drive his brothers car again. ;D
