Heres a pic of the engine compartment. We should have the rest of the tubes done with mock up tonight. the wheel well clearancing was very easy thanks in part to a 20yr old leaking battery. As soon as I get a hold of the english wheel and shrinker stretcher I'll have a nice panel to go in there. The turbo outlet has to go into the fender area a bit, but doesn't interfere with the tires at all.

Got the block back tonight, looks like .030 did the trick, he said it cleared at 20 but the ring packages are easier and cheaper for a 30. As you can see through the pic with the carb on the box, it doesn't clear the hood, so we're relocating the box to inside the fender well tomorrow to make everything work better and keep the hood as flat as possible. We also removed the roof rack and the rear window cleaner, which was slightly rotted. Up North they have salt. Down south they have pine straw, and i think it may be worse. We've also removed the grill and front bumper to make room for the sweet air dam that going to get fabricated, as soon as I can get turk off his ass and call me for a rules clarification. The bumbers stick off this thing about 1.5 miles. As you can see from the picture in the top right hand corner, yes, that is Mike....Yes... hes actually doing work....and its even productive for a change....

I just calculated out the frontal area of the pinto, and realized this thing is kind tiny but tall the frontal area calculates out at 20.34sqft. Which is exactly equal to the frontal area of my camaro. Totally bitchin'. Now if I can just aero up the back of the wagon we may be in business... More to come

Terry, i was at the machine shop tonight, and this guy told me about his friend that was so in love with the ecta that he wanted to marry it, and I asked who it was and he said terry russel. I was like no shit....small world. So I met David Kelly tonight, nice guy

I know yours is a wagon, but the ancient story about Pinto coupes is that they are actually more aero backward than forward. Not sure if that's true, but looking at them, it could be.

SpeedZealot
January 9th, 2008, 06:50 AM
well the front is 6" narrower than the back. The nose actually looks better than the camaro once you take off the front bumper. Its just the tail that sucks, because of the shape of the rear glass, and the width and depth of the rear bumper. Can you remove the rear bumper in altered??? I've actually already had a conversation with Bob at A2 about this, he said with a good spoiler shaped like the one on the camaro, it probably won't be as bad as you think. Not great, but not terrible either, because its a wagon and not a coupe

Can i ask why you went draw through carb instead of EFI?A certain class you want to fit?Not bashing just asking.

SpeedZealot
January 10th, 2008, 05:22 PM
class rules, no efi.... plus i hate tuning efi, and theres no one within 500miles of here who is worth a fu.. And i'm really handy with a carb. I figure I don't want to modify any of my carbs for a blow through, and can't afford to buy one, so draw through it is... I think it will work great except for cold starts

Thats cool.I picked up a 88 Turbo Coupe for $700.Sold the tranny for $200.Kept the motor,harness,and rearend.Then scrapped it for $250.So i got a whole turbo efi 2.3L for $250 ;D

Heres the latest pinto update. Purchased a Roll Bar from Delaware Chasis Works, and started cutting and hacking. Once again learned the cut once measure twice thing. Maybe this time it will stick... Not bad for a flux core welder if I 'don't say so myself

no its six. I put a pass door bar in after I took the pic. And I have to get a tube bent for the driver side this morning. We're looking for a 175mph tech speed. I don't think it will break 120mph though, but safety first ;D

SpeedZealot
January 25th, 2008, 02:10 PM
care to elaborate a little bit?

dulcich
January 25th, 2008, 06:47 PM
Well, It's looks like it is patterned on a clothes dryer vent or a home heater duct, a box with a hole in one side and a pipe stuck in and welded. The pipe isn't even flush with the inside wall in the direction of flow, much less tapered and smoothly joined to the full area of the plenum; big cross sectional area change from box to pipe, and the plenum serves as a fuel trap with the way the pipe just kind of T's off the side wall. Awful design for airflow all around and even worse for wet flow. I would toss it and start again.

175 in a Pinto should be exciting. I had a hatchback 72 with a 289 and had it up to 145 which is the point it starts become airborne.

If you have room - I would think a tapered box with the tube at the bottom turned to the turbo inlet. You really don't want flat surfaces facing against the flow. If this makes sense.

SpeedZealot
January 26th, 2008, 11:28 AM
i understand, but its more of a space issue. I already had to move the box into the fender, to not have to put a scoop on the hood

How about a blow through carb hat turned upside down with the plate on top? Just a thought don't take it for anything else - Like experience (i have none in this area). :) Something like this perhaps. Looks like all they did was to use a large hat with a square plate welded on to match up to the intake. Upside down and the carb would replace the manifold. Nice radius turn.

Budget, our budget is what can we get for free. Dave and I are both piss broke so we are scraping together lunch money to try and get at least one of the 2 cars going.

THAT'S a relief! I hit Mary Ellen up for money and the son of the guy who built my super head is going to give it a tune-up for cheap. Gotta get it over to him. And this guy (named Dave) I know in Raleigh area is going to go thru my donated Holley. If I had any good stuff, I'd donate it to your cause - need a 5.0 or an AOD? Maybe a 292 Chevy six core? Probably not much good for your efforts.

Good luck

An endless list.....

Waiting on the pistons right now. They're coming in at a price of $600. only the best. I refuse to build a motor with junk in it anymore, it just cost more in the long run. So It may not make it till the may race, but i still think we can rap up the points with a 400pt deficit off the start. This is america, we thrive on deficits, lol.

Not sure if that helps me get the points or not. I may have frittered away my unrun classes last year - just didn't know no better. Ignorance can be an awful thing. I'd rather see both of us going for it!

The pinto will be on the track somtime this year. Unfortunatly unless dave and I sell some body parts it is just impossible to come up with the money to finish it. The pistons were 300.00 more then we expected so that killed the money to get all the BS gaskets and stuff.

The way its looking the Camaro might not even roll out of my garage. >:(

DanStokes
February 25th, 2008, 09:54 PM
All BS aside, guys - BEST OF LUCK! No one works harder to go down the track than you do, and you've had some great success. I really look forward to seeing you both at the track, and I hope that's with a car. Seriously, if I can help, Dave's got me on speed dial - I'll be there if I can. I have time and inclination. The only thing I don't have is fundage.

Block is in the Garage, mains need to be line honed. Rods are at the machine shop getting resized to sbc wrist pins that are in the custom CP pistons. Other then that its on hold for a couple months. Trying to do the responsible thing and pay off my credit card before I jump into this project. It might make it out to the last maxton meet if Im lucky. Otherwise it will definatly be out for the next april meet.
