Ah, to be young again

When I was around 30, I bought a 78 Vette with all the crap (AC, cruise control...). It had a rod knock. One day I woke up early to fix it. I went to 7-11, and bought a can of degreaser way before our auto parts store was to open. Degreased the motor and started to pull it out. I had it out, one head removed, the crank out of it, a fresh ground crank/bearings installed along with my machinist pressing one good used rod on, and back in the car RUNNING by 5PM. Today, at 53, I'm ready to do an engine swap in my 70 Camaro. So I put the car up in the air and drained the water. The end
I'm actually still pretty quick on the work. It's getting TO IT that gives me trouble (LOL)

Around 1984, I worked at a Corvette shop. I made $7.50 an hour. I pulled a motor out of a 75 or 6 Corvette in an hour and a half. When I realized, I had pulled that motor for about $10, I went right into the office and quit on the spot, leaving that motor hanging on the chain, hovering over the car it was just pulled from. Man I hear ya......back in the day we'd pull an engine or tranny in a New York minute....wrench
it and have it fixed by lunch.

Couple of years back, when my buddy an I did my 427 swap, it was
a little different story.......didn't take much to get down under car but
a whole lot of time trying to crawl back up........ ;D

Two weeks later we were done.

Motivation is everything... back in the day I'd have heads swapped in 4 hours; motors swapped in 8 ... because if I didn't I'd be walking to work the next day

I pulled a straight-six out of a Jag XKE for, I guess, thirty dollars. Did the whole clutch for eighty. Better to not think of it that way, huh? Or better yet, why can't I hire a kid now like I was then?

my brother an I worked at the local chevy dealer-we would work on cars all day, come home and work on our B/S chevelle till midnight, go to the bar till they closed, get up at 7 am and repeat-april-oct. then in the winter we rested we only worked on cars all day and a couple evening a week..............Now I work on cars all day, then avoid them all weekend.

I can easily relate to all of that stuff guys, I can remember going to the track (usually Indy) and changing heads or camshafts or whatever usually in an hour or so with two of us doing it just to see if there was a couple hundredths to be gained and still run eliminations. Nowadays if a cat pisses on the tire, load the Nova in the trailer and head for home!

when I was 17 I pulled the 235 out of my truck, had the 396 in it and on a test drive about 30 hours later (and I did get some sleep).

It took me a year and a half to pull the 396 and get the 454 in....last year...
