    Mail Order versus Buying Local

For six years I used the same speed shop in town out of a sense of duty and subscription to the "support your local speed shop" credo. Then, largely because I got lazy and hadn't been shopping around, I found out I was being hosed for parts -- never really big bucks but always enough to tick me off and make the local big box auto parts store (the enemy of the little guy) look attractive.

Well, the local big names pretty soon pissed me off -- suffering from all the usual problems, mixed up orders, crappy return policy, bad attitude if the part doesn't fit or function as advertised, high school kids behind the counter who don't know a cotter pin from a camshaft. So I was down on them.

After much reflection I placed my first mail orders with Jegs and Summit. It's been positive, although because I live north of the border I have to drive down to the UPS Store in Ogdensburg to make pick-ups. This allows me to avoid the exorbitant Cdn broker fees. It's only an hour drive and heck, if I go early enough on Sat morning when the customs guys and gals are a little hung over sometimes I don't even have to pay the federal sales tax.

Last year I was lucky enough to come in contact with a new speed shop in town, run by a car guy with a good head on his shoulders and a desire to do right by his customers. He'll match any Jegs or Summit price, all in. So now I deal with him unless he absolutely can't get something through his national distributor -- then its back to mail order. I've told him this and he isn't fussed, just as long as he gets first refusal.

So, my question is, WHEN & FOR WHAT REASON DO YOU CONSIDER MAIL ORDERING PARTS TO BE A VALID OPTION? NEVER, SOMETIMES, ONLY IN EMERGENCY, ALL THE TIME.

I'm sort of like yourself........I'll give my local guy right of first refusal.
If he doesn't have part......pretty much gets it the next day.
    Will spend local first.

Almost always he'll match the price and I get part a little quicker.

I've purchased my share from Jegs and Summit
over the years.......and they've always backed up the parts.

      My pick would be sometimes.

I have a buddy that works for a speed shop(SpeedJunkee here at the 'Yard), and he takes care of me on pricing.

Not saying he reduces the prices, but makes damn certain the owner of the place doesn't hose me on stuff.

I DO prefer to support the locals, but I have used the mail-order guys in the past.

No issues, they did right by me.....would use them again if I needed to, but generally refrain from doing so for the most part.

I say sometimes too. But always shop around, must the time the local guys will match Jegs or Summit. But if you start getting the shaft by the local guy then it is time to find a new supplier even if it is mail order.

I usually buy "normal" stuff locally, oil, filters, batteries, etc. If it's a part that I'm pretty sure they're going to have to order anyway, I'll get it from Summit or Jeg's. Plus I love getting car parts in the mail! ;D

If time is a factor, and price isn't, local. The only parts suppliers around here are the usual Zones and Oreillys with one speed shop that has lasted more than a year or two on the other side of Oklahoma City from me. Otherwise, it's Summit mainly and Jegs occasionally.

Re: Mail Order versus Buying Local

Well, I've been a bit all over the place, new, used, spped shop, mail order.
I started buying at one local shop...prices were not what I considered out of line. I am not going to get bent if a $16 AN fitting is $16.75 at the local shop. If I need something, they had it, and I could swing by pick it up and move on. Nice talking to some older guys that know what the hell a 351c is. Hell, for that matter what a Gran Torino Sport is...
I've had mixed luck in dealing with parts chain stores.

A cousin of mine was running a speed shop, but got tired not making it worth all the time and money he felt is was costing in the partnership he had with another guy here in Omaha. He had an offer to sell out to another speedshop, they moved into his building, and then his former partner almost got killed by a massive heart attack.
That guy is still messed up bad.

                On the bright side, if I need a 55 gallon drum of real fuel, I can get a decent cost on it still {not that I need racing gas, but it's the thought...}

I know when it comes to needing parts for my 351c here soon, I am probably going to try the local shop first, and then worse case probably summit. I just want to order all my parts, and get them at one time.

My local speed shop is always $10-$15 higher on parts, and then if it is something he has to order he charges shipping. I kept buying from him (the whole support the little guy) until I started building the race a cop car. I asked him if he could do some sort of sponsorship by just charging me his cost for parts, and in the grand scheme of things, it may have totalled up to around $500 or so. His response was "you'd be better off going to summit or something". I haven't been back since and that was in 2000. Guess where I buy all my parts now?

Those stickers hole my car together. Out here, we have a few suppliers. It does pay to have friends in the business. But the bulk of stuff I get comes from Summit or Jegs. The only price match I found local was on MT race tires, but with my racer discount at Jegs/Summit Pro Shop it's still cheaper even with the handling and delivery due to the local 8.25 sales tax. I try to support my local Car Quest guy with stuff - oil/filters/wire/tools/misc stuff. I usually buy 2 cases of oil and a case of tranny fluid at a time plus a couple of racing filters, so even if I don't get there often I drop a dime when I do stop in. A dollar is a dollar - any business person knows that. I only have so many, have to choose carefully.

We have a polulation of 120,000 but no Speed Shops, the main reason for that being a Speed Shop couldn't survive just selling Wax to the guys from the local Car Club if you get my drift!
