Re: Transmission carnage!b
That Jeep competed at the pump gas drags last year. It was with a guy named Bryan Brunt. It was plagued with issues for the duration of the event, but we did see it make a few pulls on the dyno on Friday. The thing is pretty sweet for what it is. We saw it throw down about 700hp on the chassis dyno, so they must have done some big stuff to wring another 200hp out of it.
It has a late model "hemi" in it, which makes it even more impressive in my eyes.
What was happening at Memphis was that the truck would actually pull the front tires off the ground for a split second. Because those trucks are AWD the front tires would start to spin faster than the rears, which would completely freak the computer out and put the truck in a weird self preservation, limp home mode. Like I said, they never got to uncork the thing like they wanted to and put down a big number, but the truck has a roll cage in it, nitrous, and a Vortech if I am remebering properly.
I have seen a couple transmissions do this type of thing, but it's always been when they were under extreme duress.
What everyone seems to be missing (Jalopnik and others) was the this was NOT a stock transmission. In fact, it was a 4L85E with a Humvee transfercase. It also did not explode at idle. The guys were sensing some weirdness driving it around the pits and while the truck was stationary, the were bringing the revs up to check out the motor. It was when it was rev'd up that it exploded.
Other than that, they got the story just right. :
Wild stuff. It happened down at Rockingham Dragway in NC. The guy is already building another one with twin turbos.
My question...why was there no trans blanket on this thing?
Indyshiftman!!! We need your coroner's experience to educate on possible causes!

That's a good warning picture.... wonder what happened to the driver. I know of a guy who lost his leg when a trans blew up.

Yeah, where was a trans blanket? I once saw a Torqueflite blow up, sending pieces up through the dash and through the windshield.Comment

Re: Transmission carnage!b
Stone, because he's running a 'Glide, there may not be a blanket there, but there's good reason for it. Companies like Dedenbear and a couple others make cases that have been SFI approved to be sans blanket. Think of it like a clutch blow shield, except in this instance we're talking about the entire transmission case.Originally posted by StoneshrinkDave - does the F-bomb have a blanket over the trans?
Here's an old release/announcement about it.
DEDENBEAR SUPERCASE POWERGLIDE CASE WITH SFI APPROVED LINER FOR GEAR SET. Dedenbear SuperCase Transmissions-
This new, high performance case, manufactured for Powerglides, eliminates the flex and cracking problems that plague the OEM case design. The Dedenbear SuperCase is a strong, high-quality machined unit that provides consistent Trans-Brake release, less component wear, cooler operating temperatures and less binding. These new transmissions include an SFI 4.1 certified safety liner, so there?s no need to run an external transmission shield. An SFI 30.1 certified bellhousing is also standard with these transmissions

Sucks for the jeep guy. But it's part of building things that you can't find in the Jeg's catalog. I've been on a couple projects like that.
More entertaining is the typical Jalopnik/HAMB member responses. The average IQ over there, never seems to reach to the left of the decimal point. Iwww.realtuners.com - catch the RealTuners Radio Podcast on Youtube, Facebook, iTunes, and anywhere else podcasts are distributed!Comment

That and the fact they made no attempt to follow up on the story to learn anything about the Jeep and insinuate that the thing has a stock trans.

Re: Transmission carnage!b
The first person account I read, written by the guy who wrenches on the thing said that they were reving the motor up. I'm not sure if that means they were in park and reving the motor or they were in gear and bringing the thing up on the converter.
The Jalpnik story is missing on just about every single detail.
