    Cash for clunkers

Okay, I've read the bill and think - no big deal. The give you 4500 for 2002 or newer cars; 2200 or 1500 for anything older.... so what? I understand that drawing a line in the sand is a good thing and all that - but really, do I care that hondas, toyotas and debris cars (front drivers that are commuters) are going to be crushed? What do you think?

    Slippery slope.

Once you let the daylight through the cracks the program can be "enhanced" to make it do whatever they want it to.

Is it possible that in free America we would ever be ordered to turn in old cars, under penalty of law?

Is there any country that does that?

Similar situation with gun control in DC (not trying to start a debate about gun control, just using an example). First came registration, then came confiscation (if I remember correctly - please someone correct my facts if I'm wrong). The law was recently overturned as unconstitutional, but only 30ish years afterwards. In that time, our cars would be scrapped and turned into toasters, or refrigerators, or 'gasp' Priuses.

Guns are one thing. But taking our cars?

Totally not out of the scope of reason in my mind.

They take a large portion of my pack check every week, why the hell not my car?

While I agree with the slippery slope; how many of us would turn in a car worth anything? My problem comes with paying people to get into more debt by buying a new car. Why not pass a bill that gives a tax rebate for retro-fitting our cars.... example, you make an 70s car run on E85 - bonus save the environment because of the recycled nature of the fuel; and you don't spend valuable resources melting then building a new car?

And I wish some of my clients came with that status indicator... would save me a world of grief.

I just hope it's not like last time which was simply a way for big companies to pay money to polute more... something in that just pisses me off....

Not really, cars kill more people annually than guns do......and when you add in he effects of pollution on people that have emphazima, COPD, etc, the number is even greater.

But I'd add cars save more lives by getting people to hospitals and such than guns do ;) :P

*edit* and to be more relevant to the conversation, dare I say *new* cars kill more people than *old* cars :P You know, just from a statistical large volume of them on the road point of view....

Every shooting I've ever been on, the car (ambulance) came to the victim
