Re: How much do you care about "numbers matching"?
I think it has some merit. It could certainly influence what I do with a car. Worse case I'd be unwilling to complete the modifications I bought the car for and probably sell or trade it for one I'd be willing to.Escaped on a technicality.Comment

Re: How much do you care about "numbers matching"?
Its not really my bag, but I respect the guys that do care.
My father in law has a 69 COPO Camaro, he is really into stuff like that.
My wife and I always tell him that if he dies we are going to take his car to Barrett Jackson. But we will be sure to stop by the dragstrip on the way just to see what the car actually runs ;D
I agree, I would never alter, or mess with a car like that.Comment

Re: How much do you care about "numbers matching"?
My '70 Nova has a numbers matching drivetrain but that didn't stop
me from transplanting the 427 and the Tremec.
I stored the engine and tranny away........if I ever sell the car it will
go to new owner and might help the price.
So.....somewhat important.
When I build my 409.......number's matching won't even be an after thought
......just need to find the right iron to put it in.
From past experience......it's a lot more fun building a non matching car.
Good topicThom

Re: How much do you care about "numbers matching"?
I don't really care either way. Lots of guys are into it and that's cool for them. Those also seem to be the guys who have cars that never see the light of day cause they are numbers matching and that what the buyers at BJ want to buy. I just wanna be able to enjoy what I got, numbers matching or not, and drive the snot out of it.Comment

Re: How much do you care about "numbers matching"?
The only time I ever think about it is if I'm looking at a Survivor car that's never been restored. To me, those are something special.
A numbers-matching car just means it never broke the engine or transmission. Big deal. My 2001 Dakota is numbers-matching with 205,000 miles on it.
So somebody found a complete car and rebuilt it. I don't think that's any more glorious than than someone finding a bare body, restoring it and dropping in a new engine.

Sorry...a pet peeve of mine: You couldn't care less.Originally posted by mlcravenOtherwise, could really care less.
I'm with Brad.
And if it tells you how much I care, we threw away the numbers-matching trans to my Cuda when we moved the shop.Comment

Re: How much do you care about "numbers matching"?
Only if I paid the Bucks for a numbers matching car and I'd never do that. I'm probably missing something here but what fun would that be, just go to the garage and wax it, take it to an occasional car show then you're afraid to put your foot in it, nope that's not me

Re: How much do you care about "numbers matching"?
I like numbers matching stuff because it is cool to me to drive something that has everything it was built with x amount of years ago. Would never stress over buying something with numbers matching though. I like an all original car for what it is.
That being said, I have no problem hacking away at my pile of non-matching numbers Ranchero. Numbers matching would hold me up from changing a rare car, but it really depends on what the car it. Wow, I think I just started typing what I was mentally rambling.Bakersfield, CA.Comment

Re: How much do you care about "numbers matching"?
I think number matching cars that have been built with all the correct date coded items have their place for historical reasons and they surely make great eye candy in magazines and at shows......but they aren't for me...I destroy everything mechanical I own....I abuse my equipment and love to flog on it like a rented mule....couldnot do that to a #ls car.....unless that #'s car is somethin like 70 monty carlo with a 350 2brl or a 68 grand prix with a 400....big whup......I would hack something like that up in a tick.....or even a 66 fury with a #s 318 hell even a #s road runner with a 383....not really that special imo.......and need to be tweeked......some old guy had a 55 chevy survivor wiith a/c and original paint and interior at a show last week......that car was special......that car should never be touched........Comment
