Rob Kinnan and I just did the 24hrs of LeMons... if you guys haven't heard of this.... you take a 500 dollar car and race it against 43 of your closest friends on a closed course... for yep... 24 hrs... our car had 5 drivers and was put together by a guy up in Chicago... Lincoln mk something ...
The smiles per dollar factor was HUGE... We need to come up with an event like this that we can run all over the country and cover here....
You guys have any thoughts? Could we do this drag racing?

Since the organizers got to pick what they thought your car was worth..... yep... those sonny Leonard Valve covers cost... say 400 bucks... so they charged 10 bucks a lap and they were worth -40 laps... Perfect...

Just so the rest of you know. We already have our 24 hours of Lemons car. BIG BIG Mopar. Going to rule all. You'll see it come together on the site and surely be jealous. Or sympathetic. Either way is cool with us.

Rally! There are no rally events in the US, (well, hardly) and if there was some cheap ones... that crazies in trucks could attend too...

Dude, there are RallyCross and RallySprint events everywhere. Check local SCCA and NASA clubs. We're trying to decide if we'll Rally our 5.0 Mustang or our Duster first.

For the duster you could use the old scott harvey templetes and instructions from the old DC manuals.

I'm voting for the Duster.

rallyX is extremely hard in a rear wheel drive car. Take this fine specimine. A '98 Z28 with a monster cam, makes about 365rwhp with stocker 98 junk heads

#27 is my honda, and number 77 is my buddies camaro, this was our first rally cross
the second clip is of my buddies new ride, a zc crx He won the entire 2wd class running street tires, and there were full race prepped FWD rally cars there, they weren't happy.
Same guy also has a celica full prepped rally car hes restoring to race. getting new engine and six speed. should be ready soon.

Stupid question:
Are trucks/SUVs allowed to compete?

I'll have to look into it more, but it seems to me RallyCross is just a buncha cones in a dirt lot... Autocross minus the pavement I suppose... I live on 8 acres, so I could do that in my back yard... what I'm talking about is some serious rallying, like multiple mile dirt roads with switchbacks and hairpins. I live near the Sierra Nevada Mountains (well, I live ON them), and have had my share of windy dirt roads... That's what I'm talking about ;-)

I say run what ya brung. If it happens to be a truck, run the damn thing. You can't bee too picky for $500.
KeithTurk
November 24th, 2007, 04:01 AM
In the Lemon's deal a mini truck would have a significant advantage....
The race is basically a 24hr bump and grind. the frame of a mini truck would give you the ability to punt just a bit better then the other guys...
Basically that means when you get into the corner... you simply get under the other guy... and punt him out towards the wall... ( your always about a mile from the wall ) he moves out and you continue on to punt the next guy....
SOooo NO Mini Trucks Terry...

wow, another full size Mopar in the field? I'm helping out a team with an R-body Newport... I guess when the imperials start entering the field its not going to be fun anymore!
also, I'll second the SCCA stuff, and don't forget the GrassRoots Motorsports $200X challenges. Those guys are scary inventive.
As for drag racing? hmm.... it could work...

run maxton on one day,the Rock strip & round track 2 days cars have to drive to each event. And let it be run what you brung.

November 24th, 2007, 09:25 AM
Hmmm, this actually excites me a little. Someone would probably show up with something that went WAY faster than it should at Maxton though. Keith may have issues with that. I won't. But Keith might...lol

Sounds like a great idea... tires could be a problem though.... maybe that would be the exception??? you could count me in on that one and the Rock isn't that far from Maxton.
SpeedZealot
November 24th, 2007, 12:23 PM
not at all, I would be down for that contest. figure out a points system thats fair, and a total dollar amount... it could be fun. Its about a 25min drive from maxton to Rockingham. The oval is now setup for a pretty touhg road course too...

Its not a bad drive, and if you don't mind getting your ear chewed off, Sonny from Va lives in VA beach... Great guy, well, he has brain damage, still haven't figured out if it was from before o after the accident though. Anyways, god friend of mine, maybe he'll show up on here someday

Is this an event that's actually being considered, or are we just bullshitting? I know it wouldn't be for at least a few months if CarJunkie TV is involved since they're just getting started. I'm just wondering. I seriosly would try to participate in our own 24 hrs of Lemons if it's for real.
And SpeedZealot, do you live near Virginia Beach too? There seems to be a few of us Tidewater guys around here.
KeithTurk
November 25th, 2007, 04:56 AM
Tonya is from there and goes back often to see her kinders... ( both boys live there again )...
Yes the event is being considered for real....
Chad of course we'd consider it... BUT you know that we'd have to shorten the track based on safety gear....
Everyone with real gear runs from X time to X time... Yahoo's with Half gear run from Y to Y... and real race car hero's run when ever they want.... and we simply start from different places on the course.

I'll go with that. I'm in raleigh, hillbilly. Actually I'm closer to VA now, Rolesville to be exacty abour 15miles north of raleigh. Its barely on the map and I love it.
You know this would be an event for Randy Brown to win. His car lives for this stuff.... 10's in the drags, 180's in the mile, road course ready.... Look out.

KeithTurk
November 25th, 2007, 08:00 AM
Dude... you can get a NICE car for that kind of money... we're talking POS's...
Sooooo 500 -1000 on the car... less safety equipment...
Make it so 4 people can drive it... and enter the fray for less then a grand each... ( the insurance for this event is going to be staggering... )

A few questions for clarification. The only sanctioned racing I've ever done was mini-stock (VW Bug) racing at the local dirt track....when I was a teenager.
Is this going to be drag racing only or are we going to throw other types of racing in as well and make it an overall event?
You're saying 500 - 1000 on the car...does this include buying parts for it? And for that matter, what will be allowed as far as that goes? Will you allow new parts or are we talking pulling any parts we want from salvage yards and making them "true junkyard jewels"?
As far as safety equipment goes, what will be required in these $500 beauties.
To keep everything as fair as possible, what will the verification process be if someone has a nice set of heads the "pulled at the junkyard"?

dude we're in the beginning stages of this... how bout we talk about small things, like how doable is it, what will it cost to put on the event, so on and so forth
HillbillySailor
November 25th, 2007, 03:51 PM
That's what I thought we were doing, at least from the racer's point of view anyway. How doable it is, how much it will cost, and how many people participate will be impacted on where they choose to do it.

Take a look at the 24 hours of LeMons website. I think alot of you will get a better idea of how the event was run. Make sure you look over the rules, they are actually very humorous.

Thats what i had in mind for our event.... using the same rules would be great.... i would think a 3 series BMW would be spectacular for this.

A buddy of mine used to own a B-210. We beat on it regularly and only managed to kill it once.

How about running:
1. P'sOS like Keith mentioned (readily available)
2. Make the destination racetown one fun for everyone to enjoy
3. Winner doesn't have to prep for victory feast afterwards
4. Run what ya drag to it feel
IMO

Just bringing this old thread up, because it looks like I have a spot with a team for the Detroit race this year. They are actually the guys that won the Detroit race overall last year, so they have the know-how to "get'ir dun". Should be a blast, it's been 15 years since I've done a 24 hr. race. ;D
Here is a link to their site: http://trackaddicts.net/
cheers
